Up to Date and Highly Useful

I work with copyright questions from all parts of the world, and I keep a collection of books on copyright from different countries. I have been delighted to add this one to my collection and to use it as a great reference guide. The books is a survey of copyright law in Canada that will be informative for all readers, regardless of point of view and regardless of industry. Readers in need of copyright information about all types of works, from books software to music and films, will find this overview helpful. The writing is clear and the explanations lucid. I have been undertaking a study of copyright exceptions for WIPO, and I am currently turning to Harris's tome to give me foundational knowledge about Canadian law and to help assure that I have placed my specific interests in the context of the larger scheme of copyright in her home country. The book is aimed at readers who are intelligent, but not copyright specialists, so it will be an especially welcome addition to the literature for authors, educators, and other creative individuals who need to grasp the principles. The book does not offer the depth that could possibly substitute for legal advice, but that is certainly not its purpose. I recommend it highly for readers in need of a copyright overview that reflects some of the major developments in the last few years from the Canadian courts and from Parliament.

About the Author
Paul Gambaccini is the only broadcaster to have had his own series on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4. He has also had shows on Classic FM and Capital Radio. His thousands of television appearances include regular slots on BBC 1 and 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky. A former contributing editor of Rolling Stone, he was a founding co-author of The Guinness Book of British Hit SinglesAn American by birth, Paul came to Britain to attend University College, Oxford in 1970. He took UK citizenship in 2005. Paul has been named Philanthropist of the Year and is in both the Radio Academy Hall of Fame and the British Softball Federation Hall of Fame. He lives in London with his husband Christopher.

A great book about an innocent man surviving the abusive justice system of England 2013.

A great book about what it's like to be innocent and on the wrong side of the law in England. Who knew that England had such a backward system of justice? I can understand how this could have been written 200 years ago in Russia, but not today in England! Many a man would have been ruined by the experiences Mr Gambaccini had to endure. Who says gay men aren't brave!

The narrative is overlong and the name-dropping is unnecessary, however I am giving it 5* because of its importance to all of us who like to believe that our law enforcement agencies carry out their investigations in a fair (to accuser and accused) and unbiased manner. Nothing could be further from the truth in the case of Paul Gambaccini.

This book is a damning indictment of the way the Metropolitan Police (Met) and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) conducted themselves in their investigations of Paul Gambaccini in respect of two alleged historical sexual offences.

Several extremely worrying issues about the motives and mind sets of these two institutions stand out:

1. Liz Kershaw of the BBC was asked by the Met if she would like to make an accusation against Dave Lee Travis (also being investigated for alleged historical sex offences).
'No,' she replied. 'Don't you need evidence?'
'No,' she quoted the Met officer as saying. 'We only need people who agree.'
(see page 59 of the hardback version).

2. When Jim Davidson asked one of his interrogating police officers what lay behind the witch-hunt [of celebrities], the officer replied that the police had been ordered to treat all allegations as true "unless proved otherwise". (page 334).

3. The Met phoned Sandi Toksvig and asked her if she would like to complain about anybody. (page 348) Anybody?!

4. When the Met handed the file to the CPS in September 2013, seven to eight weeks before Paul Gambacinni's arrest, the police thought there was only a 3 to 5% possibility of a conviction - (so why hand the file to them?) yet the CPS went ahead with sanctioning the arrest and, without any further (allegedly incriminating) evidence coming to light, the CPS and the Met worked together to "sentence" Paul Gambaccini to a series of periodic rebailings until 10 October 2014 i.e. one year later, when they decided to take no further action, but failed to tell him why.

As a lawyer myself, and also a novelist interested in human rights, I find it difficult to distinguish between the insidious behaviour of the Met and CPS on the one hand and Senator McCarthy's witch-hunters of the 1950s on the other. In both cases, wholly innocent people suffered great psychological trauma, if not physical deterioration, devastating financial losses and the inevitable character assassination from the "no smoke without fire" mob.

As Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, said in March 2015, after considering Paul Gambacinni's treatment and that of others:

'A reform of police bail is long overdue. The police only need to have reasonable suspicion that an offence has taken place to arrest someone. It is unacceptable that, even with little evidence, people can be kept on bail for months on end and then suddenly be told that no further action will be taken against them without providing any information as to why. Paul Gambaccini was left in limbo for what he described as "twelve months of trauma", his life was put on hold, his employer [BBC] stopped his contract and his [apparently irrecoverable] costs from lost earnings and legal fees totalled �200,000. The CPS should write and apologise to Mr Gambaccini, explaining why the case took so long when the original police investigation was dropped for insufficient evidence a month before he was even arrested. They must do so in other similar cases.' (pages 413/4).

Sexual abuse, whether current or historical, is a wicked act and it must be investigated without fear or favour. But such investigations must be carried out in accordance with the most basic principles of the rule of law e.g. a person is innocent until proven guilty and should not be held on indeterminable bail while the investigative authorities undertake fishing expeditions.

The conduct of the Met and the CPS detailed in this book leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth and they should be called to account.

Overall this book provides a broad introduction to qualitative research theory, and supports the reader while they consider various types of analysis throughout the research process. Whilst Gibson and Brown are clear to state early on that they cannot cover all methods of qualitative data analysis in this introductory text, they do illustrate how a range of analysis methods affect enquiry. Importantly, Working with Qualitative Data is indeed an introduction...Throughout the book I enjoyed a number of recurring features, such as the critiques given on certain methods, theories, technologies, etc., which made for an engaging text. I also particularly enjoyed the pragmatic nature of this book. Specifically, the authors acknowledge that whilst there are research ideals, in practice these ideals may be difficult to meet for a number of reasons. By recognising the wide variety of approaches available, and the advantages, disadvantages and realities of research, this book provides a good alternative or supplementary introduction to qualitative data analysis for the beginner qualitative researcher.

Embarrassed to be reading it so late in life

After having raised my own children passed the age of six or seven I now find myself with time on my hands, some thoughts in my head, and a room of my own to do it in. I shall endeavor not to waste the luxury handed me. Written in 1928, Wolf's observations on life and literature remain timely and appropriate. Her tone is hilariously sarcastic and dry. She sounded in my head like the Lady Mary of Downton. I recommend this book to writers, scholars, and feminists seeking to broaden their familiarity with the classics of the field.

This is a must-read book for every writer or artist.

Virginia Woolf is my favorite author. Her prose is divine and what comes out of her mind is startling, even in the 21st century. This particular book is a touchstone for women writers. Actually, crossing feminist lines (as we all should), it's a touchstone for writers of either gender.

One of the best books I read in 2016.

She should be one of the most humorous women in Britain at her time. It was supposed to be a speech. Putting a lot of discursive aside, her speech started with Women and Fiction and what she had experienced and what had inspired her about the topic she supposedly gave speech to Newham Girls College. Here main theme, "numerous generations of unsung unnoticed unjusted women paved the way for what women at her era could attain was remarkable, and the girls should fight and stand on their corpses' and souls' behalf", was so strong and so well versed.

Review of Abridged Cassette Audiobook

I listened to the abridged audiocassette version of the book. Covey is a master in providing a framework for trust based, employee empowerment. The premise of the book/cassette program is that be developing a set of principles and paragigms that are valid and applicable across a large series of situations and events. Rather than focusing on management - which is performance and situation specific - the focus needs to be on the development and training of a principles based culture where the employee/family member/ etc can apply the principles in any situation. Starting with being trustworthy, then building to trust based relationships, Covey emphasizes trust and the underpinning principle upon which the entire paradigm is based.

The abridged version is a solid and interesting listen and can be completed in just a couple of hours. Worth buying.

Classic Covey

Some reviewers bemoan each and every Covey release, complaining that it is re-hashed material. These critics obviously are missing the whole "principles" point. Principles won't change from publication to publication.

If you want to feel rooted and comfortable making organizational decisions, the author points out that this must be done in the context of human needs at the fore. Be prepared to re-invent yourself, and use this book as your guide. I use the word "organizational" so that readers of this review don't misconstrue it as a business book. An organization is described in the text as a group of two or more with a common purpose: read - family, marriage, friendship, school, etc.

Be prepared to review and reflect iteratively, as many of the points made are difficult to grasp on the first pass. This difficulty is likely caused by trying to relate to the material from a faulty and deep-rooted paradigm - I was guilty - , but persevere - it it well worth it in the end.

If you are looking for a "7-Habits" and "Principle-Centered Leadership" rolled into one book, "The Eighth Habit' may be your best bet. I strongly recommend all three in sequence.

Covey is simply the best, if you are prepared to do the hard work... on yourself.

Both areas are characterised by transboundary conflicts, by challenges due to demographic and climate change, and by political and societal pressures. Based on the findings, the book provides recommendations for science and political decisions makers as well as for international financing institutions. In addition, it outlines research gaps from an interdisciplinary perspective.

In the past, MWEPs have been used as an instrument to cope with the demands of growing populations and to enhance development progress. Experiences with MWEPs have shown that a purely technical approach has not always brought about the desired results. In many cases, MWEPs have even resulted in negative implications for society and environment. Therefore, improved management strategies and enhanced technologies for a sustainable water resource management system are a prerequisite to meet present and future challenges. And, moreover, the continuous evaluation and optimisation of these measures is, likewise, a must.

He is member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) and president of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He is a professor of the Soil Protection and Recultivation Department at the Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus (BTU) and spokesperson of the Interdisciplinary Research Group “Society – Water – Technology” at the BBAW. I think that this book is really good for kids who are looking for monologues for auditions or what not. It has many great monologues for all kinds of children, different personalities each time. Any kid who needs a monologue should buy this book!!
