About the Author

Dr. Gr�gory Rolina is an international consultant in nuclear safety. He has cooperated with several nuclear safety regulatory authorities and operators worldwide. More recently, he implemented safety culture projects, as an expert for the IAEA. He is currently carrying out research at the Scientific Management Centre of Mines ParisTech in France, where he also teaches.

A good reading ... both for those who want to know how a (safety) regulator really work, and for those who want to know what can (or can't !) human factors experts achieve.
Based on field studies, this book lead us through a deep and strong analysis of human factors expertise :
I did appreciate the quasi-ethnological approach to human factors expertise, followed by a epistomological analysis of this discipline.

To my knowledge, ideas developped in this book are quite new and original ! And (public) field studies on this subject are rares.

Unsentimental yet powerful narrative

David Zucchino has written an unsentimental yet powerful narrative describing life in the trenches of the welfare system. His recountal reminds us that we cannot disregard the urgency of poverty,as it affects all of us, regardless of our economic situation or our opinion of welfare recepients. Zucchino's attempt to deconstruct the myth of the welfare queen exposes many unsavory details about life below the poverty line ; trash-picking, sex for money, children left in charge of other children. This book requires that the reader step into the shoes of a desperately poor person, leaving behind moral judgments and uninformed opinions. The reader must also remember that Zucchino's intent is not to essentialize the lives of welfare recepients by focusing his record on a few women, but to highlight the insanity of the welfare system and its effects on disenfranchised individuals; the interminable red tape, the constant harrasment by bureaucrats, and the poor distribution of funds and materials. After reading this book, we should reexamine the ways in which we show our moral obligation to those who need help.

The Myth of the Welfare Queen enthralls reader

The beauty of this book is the simplicity with which it is written. There are not technical terms to maneuver around. It takes a very candid look at a world many of us will never experience. It shows the very human characteristics of single mothers on welfare. The book never gets boring because it reads like a story. This is a non-fiction piece with all the compelling attributes of a fictional novel. This is not just a light rainy-day read either. It forces you to look into the lives of these women. Zucchino describes Odessa and Cheri's horrible necessicities like dumpster diving and prostitution so flippantly, it makes you want to scream, "But these women shouldn't be living like this!"

Unbiased Journalistic View That WIll Make You Think

This is not the book to read if you are trying to make up your mind about welfare issues or reinforce the ideas that you already have. It is an amazingly unjudgemental look at the lives of those on welfare in the inner city that will at times make you raving mad, whether at the people who refuse to work with the system for the sake of their children or at a system that fails those who give everything they have to take care of children they only want the best for, and sometimes have no direct responsibility for (grandchildren, children they have taken in). It puts real situations and struggles in the place of the abstract idea of public assistance. Within the pages you will meet kindhearted, incredibly nonbitter people, like Odessa, who you will admire and, at the same time, long to reach out to. Those who you would pity for their horrible circumstances if only you could not tell from reading about their lives that they are far too good of people to need or want pity. You will also meet people who you cannot feel sympathy for. People you will want to just slap for their irresponsibility and for not putting their children's needs before their own whims. This book shows just how complex the issue of welfare is, and that a set of laws or policies is not going help some people who are just stuck between a rock and a hard place. It will show you that there is no typical welfare recipients, even among those living in one neighborhood. Though some of the people are unbelievably good , and some horrible individuals, it will show the many greys in between. It is a portrait of those suffering for the nation's view of the "Welfare Queen." Those with huge hearts and horrible circumstances infinity entitled to whatever they need to do the job that we would not want to (raising troubled grandchildren amd great-grandchildren with meager means like Odessa, or being the self-appointed guardian of the homeless like Cheri). It is also a portrait of those who stubbornly refuse to help themselves, and fully live up to the idea of the irresponsible, neglectful mother who rather hang out with different men and continue to get pregnant than think of her own children. This is not a book that will make up your mind, but it is one that will give you an understanding of why this is such a hard issue to even begin to think of any sort of solution for.

Bounce Backs! Emergency department cases: ED returns is an emergency department case study book by Michael B.Weinstock, MD and Ryan Longstreth, MD, with case by case commentary by Greg Henry.

The book's primary goal is to improve patient safety. Although these patients were not entirely mismanaged, often important "red flags" were missed or ignored. Additional goals include continuing education in documentation, risk management, and discussion on evaluation and management of common ED complaints and diagnoses.

Thirty cases of patients are presented who "bounced back" to the ED; some arrested shortly after returning to the ED and some were again discharged (one patient had 6 ED visits). The patients presented with common problems such as headache, fever, abdominal pain, back pain, and chest pain; complaints which could have occurred in any ED, urgent care or primary care physician's office.

The layout of the book is straightforward. Each chapter begins with documentation of the initial patient visit(s) with the actual physician documentation (with typos, strange abbreviations, etc.), with only minimal modifications to ensure anonymity and readability. Next, Greg Henry comments on the physician's evaluation and documentation from both a medical and risk management perspective. He makes his comments while "blinded" to the eventual ED diagnosis. He does this for all 30 cases. We then present the final ED visit, diagnosis, and hospital/surgical course.

Finally, there is a referenced discussion of the appropriate ED approach to patients with this presenting complaint and eventual diagnosis by ED leaders including Jeffrey Kline, Steve Colucciello, Andy Jagoda, Amal Mattu, Lance Brown, Ann Dietrich, Sharon Mace, Wyatt Decker, Doug Rund, Raymond Jackson, Robert Dart, Billy Mallon, Stephen Karas, Scott Melanson, Tom Lukens, Sandy Craig, Wesley Eilbert, and Jud Hollander. These discussions refer to specific aspects of the evaluation and management of the case presented.

We close with a tongue-in-cheek discussion of medical malpractice issues, entitled; "So you want to be sued for malpractice; the top-ten ways to maximize your risk."

Must Read Material for those working in Urgent Care or the ER

I am a FNP working in Urgent Care. (A job that I sort of fell into, and love!) Needless to say, it brings with it a unique set of challenges. Although I tip my hat to the ER professionals, urgent care is frequently dealing with the same issues in terms of identifying those cases that have the potential to go sideways. This book is all about actually cases presenting to the ER, It goes over the chart note, the work up. The pt is discharged, and "bounces back" later. Sometimes it is because the work up was lacking. Sometimes, there is nothing that could have been done. The outcomes are sometimes horrible, and other times okay. What I took from this book was the importance of maintaining a constant high suspicion for the very worst things. Also, this book highlighted basic, simple things to keep you out of hot water. Did you address the pt's chief concern? Did you specify the amount of time (hours/days) in which the pt should follow up? This would be a great book for medical and NP students as well, I think, because it illustrates many key important details regarding history, context, socioeconomic issues, and what physical exam details are musts.

You should read this

I work in an ED as a physician assistant.
I have recommended this book to everyone i work with.
While there are obvious mistakes in these cases you will pick up right away, they are actual cases and serve as a reminder that if someone else missed the obvious then why couldn't you.
So take a day to read this book, get humbled by it and remember the points it makes in order to keep you and your patients safe.

Es un lenguaje universal independientemente que la versi�n original es ingles, se aplica a cualquier idioma y sobre todo al espa�ol.

A mi me gust� mucho cuando habla de la palabra pasi�n que es una de las 11 a las que se refiere el libro. Siempre pens� que estaba asociado a personas apasionadas, pasi�n por el arte e inclusive pasi�n desde el punto de vista amoroso, me di cuenta que es mucho mas ...estar dispuesto a pagar el precio para descubrir nuestra misi�n y prop�sito en la vida o estar dispuesto a sufrir por lo que amamos. Entend� que era lo que mov�a a las personas exitosas, que siempre est�n apasionadas con lo que hacen.

Las historias son muy emocionantes y demuestran como el poder de las palabras pueden afectar de una manera positiva o negativa el curso de nuestra vida. Personalmente me ha ense�ado palabras claves que me ayudan a ver la vida y las personas con una actitud mas tolerante y comprensiva. Creo que este libro deberia ser un requisito para todos de leer si quieren mejorar en todos los aspectos de su vida.

About the Author

Dr. Kimberley Waldron is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Regis University where, in addition to lower division courses for majors and nonmajors, she teaches advanced courses in the fields of inorganic and biological chemistry.� She also serves as Director of the Regis Environmental Studies Program.� Dr. Waldron received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia and her doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University.� She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology in the area of bioinorganic chemistry before joining the faculty at Regis University as a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Chemistry.� Dr. Waldron lives in Denver, Colorado with her family, along with two dogs and one cat.

Very well written book that can be understood and followed by a non-scientist. This book was required for my college course, however, I found it interesting and informative. Easy to follow explanations for all the information they are providing. For a non science major this book is a blessing.

I enjoyed this book and am sure that my grandchildren will as well. I was surprised that it was smaller and less interactive then the companion book. "Egyptology, Search for the Tomb of Osiris" which everyone in my family loves. But this one is fun and full of understandable information.

So far, what I have read, this is a very good book. I'm learning so much about Paul that makes it easier to understand what he really is all about. I'm able to understand his Letters in the Bible more, by knowing what type of man the writer is. I would definitely recommend this book.
