The world of poets and poetry is given a brief, comprehensive introduction.

Foremost this book is an introduction to different styles of poetry and different poets. It is written for those who have an interest in poetry, but are either intimidated by poetry or are unsure of where to begin their journey.
In nearly chronological order 31 poets, who lived from 1770 to 1892, are each explored in an average of ten pages. Each begins with a brief history of the poet, followed by brief selected passages - each with an appropriate introduction by Stebbing. This approach allows the reader to understand the world of poets and poetry with excitement and comprehension. In reading this book, I've discovered poets I've never heard of before. These strangers have quickly become new found friends encouraging me to further explore a rewarding journey into poetry.
The book finishes with a nice index of the first sentence of each poem, in alphabetical order. This is followed by an index of the poets. This is book is Vol II and ought to be read in conjunction with (but not necessarily prior to) Vol I Chaucer to Burns.
Published in 1913, this 440pp book ought to be read slowly, with thought and passion. Each word, by either Stebbing or the poet, is carefully and deliberately chosen. I found myself re-reading passages in order to savor and comprehend many passages. The more effort one puts into this book, the greater the reader is rewarded.

Such a fascinating character deserves an equally fascinating story

Originally published in 1830, Gobseck is among the earliest handful of works to be included in Balzac's magnum opus La Com�die Humaine, a collection of over 90 novels and stories in which he attempts to depict all the myriad aspects of French society. This novella contains many of the same characters that feature in his novel P�re Goriot. Though that masterpiece was published five years later than Gobseck, the two works must have been conceived somewhat simultaneously, as their stories are intricately interwoven. That said, one need not have read one in order to enjoy the other, and even those with no knowledge of P�re Goriot can still appreciate Gobseck.

Late one evening in the salon of the Vicomtesse de Grandlieu, the conversation turns to the discussion of a young man, Ernest de Restaud, for whom the Vicomtesse's niece Camille bears some romantic feelings. A guest and friend of the family, the attorney Monsieur Derville, shares a story from his past which he claims relates to the young man. The connection is not readily apparent, however, as the story he tells is primarily concerned with a former neighbor of his, the moneylender Jean-Esther van Gobseck. "Daddy Gobseck," as he is sometimes affectionately called, is an aged man of action with a mysterious past whose entire existence and personal philosophy revolves around the acquisition of wealth. He craves money not for the things it will buy him, but for the effect it gives him over people's lives. He considers himself and a small group of his professional colleagues to be the ten most powerful men in Paris. As people of all walks of life come crawling to him, begging for loans at usurious rates, their personal dramas become to Gobseck what the theatre is for art lovers. He is a connoisseur of desperation. Derville develops a social relationship with his neighbor, but eventually must consult the moneylender on a matter of business. From that point on he becomes Gobseck's legal advisor and bears witness to many of the old man's dealings. When Anastasie de Restaud, the daughter of P�re Goriot, consults the usurer in hopes of concealing from her husband the fortune that she has wasted on her lover, the real drama of the story begins.

The novella starts out auspiciously enough. Balzac's character sketch of Gobseck is remarkably vivid and absolutely fascinating. The book takes a turn for the worse, however, the deeper it delves into the affairs of Madame de Restaud. The dramatic events that lead the characters to seek out the moneylender are riveting. The mathematics of their business transactions, on the other hand, often dull the emotional impact of the plot. In Gobseck, as in other of his works, Balzac demonstrates his fascination with legal proceedings. He delights in the mechanics of wills, deeds, writs, and contracts--a proclivity that this reader, for one, does not share. Were it not for the tedium and confusion inspired by so much clerical detail, Gobseck would likely be every bit as strong as P�re Goriot.

If you haven't already read P�re Goriot I would strongly suggest you do so, not because it's a prerequisite for reading this book, but simply because it's Balzac's greatest work. If you enjoyed that excellent novel, then you will probably find much to appreciate in Gobseck as well. Despite the preoccupation with legal matters in its latter half, Gobseck is still a very good story overall, and Balzac has endowed it with a few truly unforgettable scenes. The singular title character alone makes it well worth the reading.

A SMALL MASTERPIECE BY THE FATHER OF CONTINENTAL REALISM

One of Balzac's small masterpieces, GOBSECK is the story of a brilliant and emotional hardened old Jewish moneylender who is a font of pyschological insight when it comes to humankind's greed, vanity and other dark motives. (Balzac manages to do this fascinating character study without being at all anti-semitic.) This astonishing novelist was God-like in that he loved humanity at its best and at its worst. This particular novella is free of the structural weaknesses and wild digressions that mar some of Balzac's longer works. GOBSECK is a key piece in understanding Balzac's gigantic fictional work of ninety-two interlocking fictions known as THE HUMAN COMEDY. Monsieur Gobseck is the father of Esther Gobseck, the most beautiful of all Balzac's many beautiful courtesans. Like the heroine of so many operas by the author's favorite composer Rossini, Esther dies for love of a man unworthy of her. Balzac always wrote with extraordinary insight and affection about the lives of women at every level of French society. Esther Gobseck is the central character in one of the author's great tomes: Les Splendeurs et Miseres des Courtisanes. The English title is usually A HARLOT HIGH AND LOW. The novella GOBSECK also provides a stunning wealth of information about the world of finance in 19th-century France. The French were practicing every form of financial double dealing long before Americans became horrified by the ongoing crimes of Wall Street money brokers. Reading Balzac is always an education -- no matter whether he is writing about the visual arts, the machinations of government officials, classical music, the particular ways lovely women flirt, or the nearly insane vacillations of public opinion. Don't pick up a Balzac novel unless you are prepared to pay attention. If you push ahead, you will be more than amply rewarded.

Seeing Shylock win, and almost cheering him on

Shakespeare's Shylock utters few words and by this writer's trick, we are made to feel the economy, the careful greed, of the money lender. Balzac makes use of the same device for his money lender, Jean-Esther van Gobseck, known as Papa Gobseck. When asked direct questions, the prodigeously verbose Honor� de Balzac has Gobseck answer in short phrases or even monosyllables.

-You hold the trust?
-Possibly.
-Will you then take undue advantage of the crime the lady has just committed?
-Just so!

The main difference between Shylock and Gobseck is that Shylock loses everything in the end and we can think of him as a tragic hero complete with a tragic flaw. Gobseck on the other hand wins, so there is no reason for us to feel empathy. He goes for the pound of flesh, albeit figuratively, and ruins many clients. We should hate him, I am sure many readers do, but instead we cheer him on partly because because he is so clever, partly because he simply profits from the mistakes of others. Gobseck's gains may be excessive but they aren't entirely unfair.

For all that, Gobseck is unlovable. He isn't actually malevolant, he isn't even dishonest. He deeply respects the world. "Life is a craft, a profession, that one must take the trouble to learn" says he about about a man dying for being too sensitive and for not knowing how to overcome the adversities of life. But while understanding how the man got beaten, one of the few men form whom he held some esteem, Gobseck has no empathy for him. He simply doesn't love anything, so how can we love him?

A Must Read For Those Seeking To Change How Govt, Works

This book is the best I have read about how to improve the operation of government.

As the former Deputy Director of the Missouri Department of Revenue and Director of Performance Improvement for Missouri State government, Ken Miller understands how government works. Named as one of the country's top change agents by Fast Company magazine, Miller's latest book Extreme Government Makeover is a must read for anyone interested in changing how government works.

So much of government reform efforts focus on getting employees to do more through performance evaluations, financial incentives, etc. Miller points out that the problem with government is not lazy employees, it is how government is structured and designed that prevents government from working better, faster and cheaper.

Miller's years of experience in helping government agencies improve performance allows him to provide great real world examples of how his ideas and process has worked.

Interesting perspective on current concepts - repackaged! Would have preferrred something new. View of government is from outsider/management not "in the trenches". Tips and techniques don't take into consideration current real-world situation.

We are currently engaged in a Business Process Reengineering (BPR) Project within our state department of social services using Ken's books and ideas. The efforts are being assisted by colleagues in Ken's consulting company- but actual decisions and flows are being designed by first line employees assisted by several supervisors. The first of 15 offices which are part of the BPR project was fully operational with the new process. The first full month of production in this office showed we went from determining eligibility for benefits on the first visit to the office from less than 5% of applicants to 70% of applicants. This saved about 15,000 of the normal volume of 25,000 customer interactions in the month for this office. This success encouraged some of the other offices to request their BPR Project be started earlier than originally scheduled.

excellent guide to belief change!

When was the last time that you changed your mind? I hope it was not long ago.
With this phrase, Sven Ove Hansson introduces the reader to the topic of his book: The Dynamics of Belief (usually referred to as belief revision or logic of theory change).
Who can be interested in belief dynamics? The list is long: philosophers that want a model for the behaviour of the rational agent with respect to his belief dynamics, or for the changes in scientific theories; legal theorists that seek a model that would represent the dynamics of amendments, promulgations or derogations in the legal codes; computer scientists that want a model to formalize the notion of updating databases and knowledge bases; etc.
The belief dynamics was introduced in the late 70's, and the seminal paper of Alchourron, Gardenfors and Makinson 1985, where they presented the (later called) AGM model, became its main milestone.
The AGM model was used as a formal framework to characterize the dynamics and state of belief of a rational agent \footnote{{\sc Peter G{a}rdenfors}. " Knowledge in Flux: Modeling the Dynamics of Epistemic States}. The MIT Press, Cambridge, 1988.}. The beliefs are represented by sets of sentences closed under logical consequence (belief sets). Further works (in which Hansson was one of the most important researchers) extended the model to non-closed set of sentences (belief bases).
In the AGM framework, the dynamics of belief recognizes three basic operations: Expansion consists simply in adding a new belief to the corpus of belief. Revision, related to expansion, incorporates new beliefs, but, as opposed to expansion, consistency is preserved. Consequently, the revision process must eliminate enough sentences to avoid contradiction with the new belief. Contraction occurs when some beliefs are retracted but no new belief is added.
These changes have the following constraints (in priority order): {\bf 1.} " Primacy of new information}: the new information is always accepted {\bf 2.} " Consistency}: if possible, the new belief set must be consistent {\bf 3.} " Minimal loss of previous beliefs}: This criteria attempts at retaining as much of the old beliefs as possible. \\
In the 80's the AGM model acquired the status of a standard model, and was characterized in at least five different equivalent ways: " Postulates, partial meet functions, epistemic entrenchment, safe/kernel contraction" and " sphere-systems".\\
In the 90's, the AGM model was extended, generalized and modified. Among these extensions, we can mention: Non prioritized belief revision, iterable belief change functions, withdrawal functions, modal logics for theory change, hidden structures of beliefs, etc..
In this book, Sven Ove Hansson made an exhaustive description of the AGM model and its equivalent presentations, both in belief sets and belief bases. He also included a wide compilation of the approaches mentioned above developed until the end of 1993 and some further developments. The book has two major achievements: It bridges the gap of a textbook on this subject (the only previous one was the mentioned Gardenfors' book) and provides a deep study of the dynamics in belief bases, needed to apply the AGM model to real contexts.
The book is perfectly oriented to teach courses in belief dynamics, and provides a list of suggested courses (page 1) according to the level of the audience.
Each chapter is divided into two parts: the first one is more colloquial and useful to understand the intuitions, the construction and the purposes of the different approaches. The second one, marked in all cases with ``+", is devoted to the formal apparatus of the previous part. In the "informal" part, the theorems and properties are explained, but the proofs are left to the ``+" parts (in some of them, new and more elegant proofs are provided).
Chapter 1 introduces belief dynamics and the basic tools needed to represent beliefs: logical consequence, belief sets, belief bases, expansions, remainder sets. Chapter 2 explains contraction, including the five AGM presentations and the representation theorems that show the equivalence among them. This chapter also opens the discussion to alternative models like Severe contraction, or Levi's contraction. Chapter 3 is devoted to revision, its different presentations, alternative models and its relation with contraction. In Chapter 4, Hansson introduces an analysis which relates changes in belief bases to changes at "knowledge level"\footnote{See: {\sc Allen Newell}. The knowledge level. " Artificial Intelligence 18\/} (1982), 87--127.}. Chapter 5 presents two extension for the representation language: modal sentences and conditional sentences. Introducing the latter in the representation of belief is incompatible with the Ramsey test. This incompatibility is well known as " Gardenfors impossibility theorem}. Chapter 6 introduces the reader to open problems.

To sum up, this book is an excellent guide to belief change researchers who need a summary of the area. It is also an excellent textbook for beginners who can read the book by following any of the courses suggested.
