The vampire of literature and films is perhaps too familiar, but the underpinnings of the legends in the folk traditions of southeastern Europe are quite different from the popular image, and more interesting.
Eleven fascinating essays by scholars in Slavic studies, anthropology, history, and psychiatry here illuminate this dark corner of primitive imagination, show how such a seemingly bizarre belief is tied to certain folk practices of exhumation, bring the studies up to date with cases of modern "vampires", and offer a psychoanalytic interpretation of the phenomenon. (The "score" rating is an unfortunately ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)

The Vampire--A Casebook, is fairly informative. It makes the observation in the first chapter that the word Vampire is actually of serbian origen, not transalvanian or hungarian as many people think. It is edited mostly by college professors none of whom seem to believe in any kinds of vampires as being real. One guy teaches a class on vampires at the University of Virginia. He edits the chapter of the book which deals with seventeen or so brief--one paragraph--reports of peasents in Romania's accounts of what vampires do. They're capable of drawing illusions of enchanted forests in so doing converting a hapless victem who believes the illusion into a vampire. The chapter on the greek vampire points out differences and variations of customs from other regions' as well as the similarity of: one way of making a vampire is to have a cat (or sometimes any other object) cross over a corpse. This book stinks -- literally!

Medieval Muck is a lot of fun. In addition to the smells (they're not ALL bad), there are many bits of historical trivia. For example, you'll learn more than you ever wanted to of the death of Thomas Becket. Kids who like the Goosebumps books will probably love this series. I can't wait to smell my way through more history.

All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

This is quite simply the best book on the Ricci Flow that I have ever encountered. This is the only book on the Ricci Flow that I have ever encountered. I believe that its value to the development and application of geometric analysis for the study of manifolds is incalculable (no pun intended). I must say, I have never seen nicer functions or such improved metrics. I am particularly impressed by by the talents of the second author, Dr. Dan Knopf, as displayed in this fine publication. His commanding grasp of the material, lucid and thought-provoking presentation, and fine expository style are nothing short of breathtaking. I am pleased to recommend this excellent work.

FOR people who know nothing about the "scene", it is a real eye-opener. But there was a "Slouching toward Bethlehem" feel about it. The overwhelming sense of a dissolute, self-indulgent life, wrapped in chemicals was depressing toward the end of the book.Since my own world and the work that I do has introduced me to many meth addicts, without teeth, brains like scrabled eggs, skinny and disheveled, it was hard to imagine so much consumption.
There were entirely too many grammatical errors toward the end also, as though the editing process bogged down. Their for they're, incorrect grammatical construction, etc
One thing that ran through my mind as I read. I am sure there are many guys out there who are terrified that their lives are the only lives in the world that are experiencing the same unabashed hedonism. For them, getting the Chronicles might be a way of telling them they are not alone.
Don't expect a story. It is what it says it is -- a chronicle. I had hoped for something with a little more redeeming messages, but perhaps that will be in the next book.

does a wonderful job of simply laying out the facts

Brittany, again, does a wonderful job of simply laying out the facts. It's unfortunate that the tone of IC is so negative on the internet. I am deeply grateful for western medicine but unfortunately IC is a disease that you must approach holistically - there is no magic pill. Western medicine cannot help you for this "chronic disease" and Brittney, like many other natraupathic advocates, lay out exactly how to do that through nutrition, ph balance (specifically the importance of alkalinity), yeast control, exercise, gut healing, mentality/meditation and allergies. Anyone, myself included, who has truly healed from IC and has taken this route of self discovery, open mindedness, strong desire to get better, drastic lifestyle changes and MANY ups and downs. But it is worth it, you will get there eventually! Brittany is not only hopeful and encouraging in her book but extremely knowledgable and good at relaying the information. I urge you to give her youtube videos a listen and read her book. There is hope, IC IS curable and you WILL get your life back. Your body knows how to heal itself, you just need to provide it with what it needs.

Not bad! Most of it I already knew thanks to Laura L. From healing your vulvadynia naturally- in which she gives you her e book free. But I respect Brittany for her healing journey and what she's been through. I'm following a more alkaline diet by eating more veggies rather than eating fruit which is a weak acid. Overall, this book gives a foundation to maintain your health and achieve better health!

Waste of money if you've got interstitial cystitis

I've got interstitial cystitis and it's a very serious medical condition. I think this book offers nothing truly useful for healing this condition at all (other than basic diet changes). She focuses on emotional healing, detox and self love for much of the book. For anyone who has IC you'll probably know that being told to love yourself more is difficult to read when you're in pain...The recipes include known IC flare triggers (tomatoes and green apples) which in my view is dangerous. If you just want a book about healthy eating it might be okay - but I got nothing out of it that was new or helpful for healing my IC. If you've got IC - there's more accurate, research based free information from doctors and women who suffer from the condition at the interstitial cystitis network website ic-network.com - sorry this is such a negative review but I really feel like I wasted my money
