I had just gone through the long road of recovery from severe childhood abuse and being on the other side I felt a little wobbly on things like setting healthy boundaries and building self-esteem. This book helped a lot. By following the advice and doing some of the excercises, I learned how to get on my feet and stand solid. The only downfall for this book in my personal case was a lot of it pertained to achieving that healthy life that you had before the trauma. With childhood abuse, for me, there was no reference point to compare too. Despite those sections, the exercises are solid, easy to follow, and work. You must be self motivated and willing to explore traumatic feelings.

Required Read That is Actually Enjoyable
By S. Mason
This book is very well written and I actually look forward to reading my assignments out of it. There are very practical life-lessons to be learned from this book. The step by step processes and the insights are well worth any price. This book is great for teaching you to take care of yourself as those who have been traumatized in life usually have issue taking care of themselves. This book stands alone and is not a workbook in the sense that it goes along with another text. This is a book that you read and work in.

A gentle approach to something difficult. Great book!!!
By KD
Great read for me. I am still working on it. I suffer with PTSD and I am currently starting EMDR treatment and this book helps with being able to use a combination of reading and therapy. This book is a good read and also helpful for those who are on their journey and need a little bit of help on their own as well at home to help them when they're not in therapy. Overall, a book to help you become and learn to stay strong from what your individual trauma is. The workbook helps you and goes easily into things, in a gentle matter and doesn't rush into things. You work at your own pace and just take your time. No need to rush anything, especially with trauma. Gentle read and gentle approach. Definitely one of the good ones.

Excellent Variety, Gems for every voice
By Kerlahna Marie
There are some really nice songs in this book. The english translations are rubbish, but the songs themselves are really great. There are a few rarish ones in here too, so they make a nice addition to repertoire.
There are duets, songs for baritones, mezzos, as well as sopranos and tenors.
I'm a beginning soprano, and I'm currently learning Solvieg's song and Si Mes Vers Avaient Des Ailes. Both of which are beautiful and on the simple side, but I could also use them for recitals later down the road.
I recommend this book highly.

56 Songs You Like to Sing
By SHV
Purchased for my daughter who is taking voice lessons...her teacher uses it. I don't know many of the songs, but it seems like it's a good variety of music for a beginning vocal music student...Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, Strauss among the composers. Challenging, but she enjoys the songs.

From the pianist's point of view....
By Lucie Peek
This book should have been updated a long time ago. There are a dozen other books out there that have the same songs in them that have clear print and are easier to read. If you are a vocalist considering this book, do your accompanist a favor and get your song in a book that has a more updated font. The music is terribly difficult to read, strictly from a pianist's line of sight.

The Best Ongoing Fantasy Series Right Now
By H. P.
“It was the false dawn; the time when old people die, when hopes fail, and when ambuscades lose their nerve, when men call out and wives comfort them.”

Cameron is telling one heck of a story. The Plague of Swords shows just how big a story Cameron is telling. Book 1 keeps it small, telling a Legend-esque siege story. Book 2 tells another small story, shifting venues from an England analogue to an Eastern Roman Empire analogue, while at the same time building on minor plot threads started in the first book. Book 3 starts bringing all of those plot threads together for a Storm of Swords-esque bang. There is an inevitable letdown, but Cameron handles things considerably better than Martin did. What do you do after bringing so many plot threads to a head in Book 3? You bust your world wide open.

A carefully constructed structure is the best thing about The Traitor Son Cycle. Well, that, and the great fight scenes. And the loving attention to historical detail. And the elaborate and innovative worldbuilding. And the dragon demi-gods. A carefully constructed structure is among the many great things about The Traitor Son Cycle.

The Plague of Swords opens immediately after the events of The Dread Wyrm. The forces of good are beginning to see just how fragile their great victory was. Their armies are depleted. The emperor is dead. The new alliance with forces of the Wild sits uneasily.

“‘That’s bogglin laughter,’ No Head said.
‘You like them?’ the woman asked him. The targets were moving to a hundred twenty-five paces.
‘Spent most o’ my life killin’ ’em,’ No Head said. ‘But then,’ he said, ‘I found they ain’t so bad.’”

Forces elsewhere are under attack. A new, human, plague follows the horse plague. And a new, even more deadly threat appears in Galle.

The early plot focuses heavily on efforts to magically combat the (magic) plague. We kind of know that this won’t be the end of the series, but Cameron ratchets up the tension nonetheless, and named characters die. Meanwhile, Gabriel is pushing Mr. Smythe, their dragonic ally. He’s beginning to realize that Mr. Smythe hasn’t been entirely honest. He’s beginning to understand the scale of what’s going on. And he’s beginning to see that their interests may not remain aligned.

There is some incredible stuff, but it’s tough to say too much without spoiling the book. So I’ll take a minute and instead talk about how great the worldbuilding is. It’s easy to forget how much has been added writing reviews for each book in a series. But what Cameron has revealed to us is so cool and interesting and perfect that it deserves a little extra attention. In the world of The Traitor Son Cycle, the Europe-analogue isn’t bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, it’s bordered by “the Wild.” It’s the Wild that’s full of bogglins and irks and wyverns and serves as almost an antagonist itself at first. But while at first it resembles any number of desolate lands full of monsters in fantasy (although it is the opposite of desolate), we learn that it is something more as Cameron fleshes it out. The hordes of monsters all have their own interests and factions. The Canadian Cameron gives the Wild a distinctly Canadian feel, from its vast forests and bogs to the Amerindian-esque natives to the giant beavers.

Cameron adds to that in The Plague of Swords. The Sahara is reimagined as the consequence of the depredations of the Necromancer.

“‘What is on the other side of the desert?’ Gabriel asked.
The sultan looked south. ‘Once, there were other kingdoms,’ he said. ‘Now nothing comes out of the desert but the not-dead. Someday, perhaps…’”

We learn much more about the demi-godlike dragons and their role in the world. Yes, there are zombies, but with a new twist (and medieval zombies remain fresh to me in a way that modern zombies have long ceased to be). The countries and peoples in The Traitor Son Cycle map closely to the countries and peoples in real medieval Europe (and North Africa), but rather than as a crutch Cameron uses it as an opportunity to let his deep historical knowledge enrich the world and story.

Oh, and Gabriel’s griffon is now grown. And there are sea monsters. The fight scenes have always been a highlight of the series, and there have been a lot of them. Cameron mixes things up a little this book. The big fights are in the air or on the sea, not on land. Both are absolutely fantastic.

If The Plague of Swords suffers, it is from middle book-ism, just a bit. A lot of time is spent on infodumps for the new worldbuilding that we can expect to come to a head in the fifth and as I understand it final book in the series. A lot of time is spent positioning the various armies. A fair amount of action takes place off-screen. And the climax is a bit abrupt, especially after the extended climaxes we’ve been spoiled on. But these are all quibbles, and as the fourth book in a series The Plague of Swords should be judged in its role as such and as a part of the series as a whole. And the series remains my favorite and has me so fired up it is influencing my current reading choices.

Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful
By Michael Dawson
I had forgotten how utterly splendid this series really is. Where many series tend to jump the shark after 3 or four installments, The Traitors Sun Cycle just maintains a compelling narrative and continues to develop the characters we have all grown to love. Somehow Miles Cameron takes us into the minutiea of the physical constraints of the period (armor, shipboard travel etc) without being dull. On the contrary, the detail helps ground the fantastic elements of the story and is a constant reminder of the personal elements of the story.

I will definitely buy the next book in the series. BTW, I also bought the audio book version and it is a joy to listen to.

Keeps getting Better
By Brad B.
I was getting close to the end of this book, and I spent a fair bit of time considering if I could remember another series where I had no doubt that each book was better than the previous one. Mr Cameron is growing in skill, learning to polish his weak spots to the point where he can pull off multiple character threads without missing a beat...and have some turn out as engaging as the primary.

Really can't recommend this enough...only thing I didn't like was how I seemed to really struggle keeping names/characters straight. Re-reading the prior books would certainly have helped, but a few more timely memory nudges would have been appreciated...

Pride, Prejudice & Secrets, by C.P. Odom

One of the turning points in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is Miss Elizabeth Bennet's passionate refusal and denunciation of the equally passionate but infinitely more repressed Fitzwilliam Darcy. However, unforeseen events can lead to the most unexpected consequences. During a visit with her friend Charlotte Collins at Hunsford, Elizabeth falls prey to illness for almost the first time in her life just as Mr. Darcy comes to call. Befuddled by her illness, she misinterprets his proposal of marriage, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is mistaken for acceptance of his suit by a joyous Darcy. By the time Elizabeth regains her health, it seems that every one of her acquaintance - and many outside of it - accept that she is engaged to the last man in the world she would ever consider. Elizabeth knows that her life will be forever changed, and the consequences will spread further than she imagines. From the author of: A Most Civil Proposal Consequences

Pride, Prejudice & Secrets
By maryann
When I ordered the novel I thought there would be many secrets revealed by the title of the novel and found that to be deceiving. All the secrets were those of the ones we read about in previous P & P variations. I felt there were parts I really liked as far as Mr. Collins standing up for Lizzy when she was ill; Caroline apologizing for her mistakes; Mary King's uncle for what he did to protect her; Wickham's behavioral changes; and that Jane didn't marry Bingley. However, I do think that throughout the novel we should have heard a little about how Jane and George were getting along. It kept you in suspense until the end of the novel and I kept wondering why????!!!
I did like the plot but it sort of dragged and I have read C.P. Odom's previous novels so I was disappointed to some extent with this one. Sorry but that is my honest opinion. Not all novels are to everyone's taste.

Engaging and Sweet Variation Story
By Sophia Rose
What if instead of getting the chance to declare in ringing tones that Fitzwilliam Darcy was the last man in the world she would consent to marry, Elizabeth Bennet was so ill from fever that her distracted response was taken as a yes and she was now engaged to a man she despised?

Yep, that is the basis of this new engaging story. Talk about enemies to loves trope, right? In the Regency Era, engagements were taken seriously much in the way of a formal contract and it was your honor, your reputation and your family's position in society along and the community along with that of the other party tat was at stake when one broke such a contract.

While dealing with a severe illness, Elizabeth first sets out angrily determined to sort it out with a sound refusal until caution forces her to let it play out. Darcy is blind to Elizabeth's less than enthusiastic response and behavior as he experiences love and determination to have his Elizabeth even if it must mean going against the most powerful members of his family and upper class society expectations. A cooler head prevails as Elizabeth thinks through her new tough situation and starts to see things aren't adding up about what she allowed herself to believe about the enigmatic, silent man who has declared his love for her. Is he the proud, arrogant, selfish and cold man or is he the caring, loyal, dutiful, shy, sometimes arrogant companion or maybe a bit of both? She is confronted with the evidence of her own eyes and experience that her first impressions about the man she detested might not have been accurate and others might have been right all along. The rest of the book tells how they begin again on shaky ground and build something new with the secrets from their pasts shadowing them. They observe and interact with family members, friends and even enemies living out their lives both at home and abroad.

It was a wholly encompassing story in that Darcy and Lizzy's story isn't told in isolation, but is nested amongst the story of several connected members of their extended friends and family group. There are multiple points of view and multiple story threads that weren't tough to follow, but I confess that some were more of interest than others. Let's just say that everyone gets more of a story and I mean everyone. It was like getting a set of stories all smooshed up into one that may be great or not so great depending on how you feel about the particular characters in question or how much extra detail away from the main plot interests you. I was fine with it being a nosy, curious sort, but I did feel the bulky quality of this story while in the middle. It was full of so many things since it went off in several directions. I wasn't expecting all that, but I was heartily happy for it nonetheless. The big impression for me is that there is just more all around of all the things I enjoy- story, characters, background.

There was one feature in the storytelling style that while it gave great insight, it was also distracting. There are bits of character monologue from whichever character is telling the story. It's in italic font so its obvious what it is, but its just the nature of it being there with the dialogue and actions that make it too much for me to concentrate on the story. It was particularly hard when in the beginning Elizabeth was having a whole conversation in her head each time she heard or did something. Darcy says something so off she goes into a long think, but oh yes, where were we? I'll take responsibility that maybe this little niggle is just me being distractable, but with all else going on (other storylines and POVs) it was a bit much for me. It added to my understanding of what all went into their thinking behind the words and actions, but didn't really forward the story.

The historical background is definitely well researched from the details of Regency daily life to the climate of society to the time period of a country at war. I love all that. It was there, but it didn't dominate over the plot. The war scenes were a good balance to show the reality, but softened since it is part of a romance story. The usual settings were well represented too in balls, family parties, London and country activities, but they were all driven by the characters and not just boring descriptive actions to fill things in.

I will also say that for those familiar with the original P&P story this one does some strong deviating when it came to the direction of the characters' lives and situations. It delved into motive more and allowed the reader to get to know so many more characters better through the additional plot threads and POVs. People can change and grow and people can be more than they seemed while others were exactly what they seemed. Without spoiling things which I would if I went into detail of explanation about that statement, I'll just say that I love where this story went for several minor characters that were not so minor as a result. The big surprise was original character Captain George Fitzwilliam the older, middle brother to Colonel Fitzwilliam. I loved his rugged, rough and piercingly honest personality particularly when he went up against the sly wit of Mr. Bennet. Delightful scene that left Mr. Bennet speechless with his shock and awe technique. I think he'll give even heart-stopping hero, Darcy, a run for his money with readers.

An extra feature that I found a nice bonus was the author putting out a Q&A about the book giving extra insight that I found informative and enriching to the reading experience.

All in all, I found it slow, but satisfying. Fans of Austeneque will definitely want to pick this up. Lovers of sweet historical romance with a large cast of characters, character-driven plotting and bonus romances included should give it a try too.

My thanks to the author and Meryton Press for the opportunity to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

Great character portrayal, easy to follow, humor and wit, it's a must read
By S. Schaffer
I loved this novel. This variation on p&p is unique, intriguing, and I felt the characters were very similar to the beloved originals. The author made this easy to follow with dates at each main event from different locations. In the beginning its days apart and toward the end months apart. Each chapter has quotes at the beginning which gives a hint into what to look forward to. Our characters thoughts are italicized throughout which really helps the novel flow. Even the descriptions of the carriage, furniture, sounds are well placed and yet not overdone. All our favorite characters are in this novel. Conversations are witty and humorous. Darcy is his usual self but even better. Darcy is well read and forward looking as well as a little reserved but with Elizabeth's help he relaxes a bit. Elizabeth initially is her impatient self but her reasoning ability shines through as she comes to accept her engagement and moves forward through marriage. Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam is funny and supportive and yet blunt when he feels it is necessary. He ends up married in this novel after being in Spain and its a real shocker. There is an additional Fitzwilliam brother named george and he's unusual, direct, and not very romantic but carries off one lovely young woman to Bermuda. Lady Catherine, Anne, mr. Collins, Charlotte, mr, and mrs. Bennet, the bingleys, the Bennet sisters wickham and mary king are all in this novel (all the original characters and a few new ones are in here). Mr. Wickham has a very surprising life in store. Who was to know mary king's uncle is in the mob so to speak? Wow, does he put poor old george thru his paces. I enjoyed one rascal dealing with another rascal. It was so much fun. Lady matlock and Lord Matlock are very surprising but I really enjoyed their characters. Lady Matlock endeavors to teach her sons about what makes a marriage work well from their youth up and it's quite enlightening. The descriptions of our characters personalities, illnesses, aging difficulties, are so right on target that you feel as if Lord Matlock is being nudged by you because he's so hard of hearing. The epilogue ties it all together nicely. After borrowing this from the kindle library I have every intention of buying it. I would say out of the hundreds I have read this is one of my favorites. There are a couple romantic intimate scenes mentioned upon marriage. These are not overly descriptive in nature more of a breast brushing type of thing. If it had been more descriptive of these intimate moments I would have rated it lower and or discontinued reading it. There really is something for everyone in this novel. Read it you will enjoy it! I read it twice.
