Young Money: Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street's Post-Crash Recruits, by Kevin Roose

Becoming a young Wall Street banker is like pledging the world's most lucrative and soul-crushing fraternity. Every year, thousands of eager college graduates are hired by the world's financial giants, where they're taught the secrets of making obscene amounts of money-- as well as how to dress, talk, date, drink, and schmooze like real financiers.

YOUNG MONEY
Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street's Post-Crash Recruits

YOUNG MONEY is the inside story of this well-guarded world. Kevin Roose, New York magazine business writer and author of the critically acclaimed The Unlikely Disciple, spent more than three years shadowing eight entry-level workers at Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and other leading investment firms. Roose chronicled their triumphs and disappointments, their million-dollar trades and runaway Excel spreadsheets, and got an unprecedented (and unauthorized) glimpse of the financial world's initiation process.

Roose's young bankers are exposed to the exhausting workloads, huge bonuses, and recreational drugs that have always characterized Wall Street life. But they experience something new, too: an industry forever changed by the massive financial collapse of 2008. And as they get their Wall Street educations, they face hard questions about morality, prestige, and the value of their work.

YOUNG MONEY is more than an exposé of excess; it's the story of how the financial crisis changed a generation-and remade Wall Street from the bottom up.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, February 2014: If Martin Scorsese's film The Wolf of Wall Street is about the finance industry's greediest adults, Kevin Roose's Young Money: Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street's Post-crash Recruits is a look at those wolves as cubs. The book is a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of the kids starting at Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Credit Suisse (it's less sympathetic toward their bosses, who come across like shameless versions of the parents in Peanuts comics). These young bankers and analysts discover that while the pay is good, the hours are bad and the never-ending sense of existential dread is ugly. But perhaps the great irony of the crash of 2008 is that even as it eroded the industry's reputation in the minds of college students, the job market it decimated left those graduates very few employment options. Despite their hesitations, many scared twentysomethings entered the finance sector, as one of the few institutions that was still hiring. Roose suspects that banks attract "confused, insecure college seniors, who are smart and capable in a general, all-purpose way, but aren't phenomenally talented at any one thing." Most of the eight workers Roose follows end up burning out or quitting; the ones who succeed and stay in finance--you feel the worst for them. --Kevin Nguyen

From Booklist
Roose, a financial journalist and author, offers a compelling glimpse of Wall Street in the post-2008 recession era as he shadows eight first- and second-year entry-level analysts at leading investment firms. All college graduates in their early twenties, they give him unauthorized access to their own experiences and lives in return for absolute anonymity. We learn about their big bonuses and lifestyles along with 100-hour work weeks. Roose is quoted, Their offices are covered in moldy takeout containers . . . . They dress in whatever is left in the clean laundry bag . . . and haven’t seen sunlight in two months. The author discovers the toll the 2008 recession has taken on Wall Street, shrinking it significantly with lost jobs, and he also cites emerging competition for recruits from the growing technology industry. Overall values in this generation may be changing, too, as a student and potential Wall Street recruit said, Everyone wants to make money. But when I’m working in the place, I want to know that I’m doing some good. A thought-provoking, excellent book. --Mary Whaley

Review
Praise for YOUNG MONEY:

"If Kevin Roose's finely crafted YOUNG MONEY does not scare you straight about the life of a young financial analyst on Wall Street, it can't be done. Roose's frolic through Wall Street's playpen is a must-read."
--William D. Cohan, New York Times bestselling author of House of Cards and Money and Power

"Despite all the press about Wall Street, the stories that don't usually get told are those of the recent college graduates who clamor for the chance to work 100 hour plus weeks at the big banks. Kevin Roose's new book, which follows a handful of analysts through the trials and tribulations of their early years on the Street, is a thoughtful exploration of their motivations and their experiences-and it's a great read."
--Bethany McLean, coauthor of the New York Times bestsellers The Smartest Guys in the Room and All the Devils are Here

"A cautionary true-life tale, YOUNG MONEY should be required reading for every college student who is contemplating a job on Wall Street. As for the rest of us, who remember Wall Street before 2008, Kevin Roose has provided a great window into how that world has changed-and how it hasn't."
--Connie Bruck, New York Times bestselling author of The Predators' Ball

"When Michael Lewis wrote Liar's Poker in 1989, he hoped to discourage ambivalent young elites from starting careers on Wall Street. The opposite happened. Kevin Roose may have better luck with Young Money, his look at rookie bankers in the wake of the financial crisis." --Bloomberg Business Week

"Highly entertaining and impressive ... Roose's captivating read is sure to appeal to readers young and old who are interested in the zeitgeist of Wall Street since the crash."
--Publishers Weekly

"[Young Money] offers a compelling glimpse of Wall Street in the post-2008 recession era...thought provoking, excellent book."
--Booklist

"The young people who have flocked to Wall Street are often badly used, caught up in power struggles among middle management and little appreciated ... [Young Money] captures the daily indignities to which the junior capitalists are subjected."
-- Kirkus Reviews

Intriguing Anecdotes from Millenial Wall Street
By Will
The author pens sweeping tale on post-2008 Wall Street, focusing on the work & lives of 8 recent hires to top banks. Kevin Roose of the New York Times charts these young people's career growth as they take on one of America's most reviled and formidable industries only years after the financial crisis.

The author claims to be intrigued by these young people, but often colors his work with revulsion towards the big banks, his subjects' employers, for their role in the financial crisis. The author remains generally objective in evaluating his subjects and their stories are well-framed with applicable details from the news. Ultimately, Roose's tale is enjoyable but cannot be considered as objective as he intends.

I do enjoy books that enlighten me about the world of finance ...
By Jacqueline Robison
I do enjoy books that enlighten me about the world of finance and wall street and this one is good. It follows a number of young and newly hired financial analysts through their first 2 years, taking snapshots of their lives at different points. You gain insight to the jobs, the structure of finance, and the personal life (mainly work and more work). An interesting read, but oddly it didn't pull me into caring about the subjects as much as I might have thought.

The Difference between a Journalist and an Academic
By Calvin Professor
Prior to this, I read Liquidated by Karen Ho, an anthropologist who worked on the inside and had similar tales to tell of Wall Street. Kevin Rose is a journalist, and there is a significant difference on how the "story" of Wall Street is told. Both books are worth the read, so my comment should not be construed as a criticism of Karen Ho's. Kevin Roose provides a lighter read on the subject, but it is a good read because he focuses more on the stories of individuals and how their lives change. Kevin was not an insider, but through the lives of first year analysts that he followed, you begin to understand the transformation or solidification of personal values through the first two years of the Wall Street machine. It's not just reporting, Roose tells their story as a story teller. His role as a journalist is significant because only the presence of journalist would have been the catalyst for the reaction when his cover at a Wall Street banquet was blown. That reaction tells you a lot about how Wall Street bankers think - they don't deny their money-centric value system. They relish in it.

A History of the Occult Tarot, by Ronald Decker, Michael Dummett

First published in 2002 and finally available again, A History of the Occult Tarot is the classic work on the history of the Tarot deck and its uses in occult circles. Starting with the late 19th century, the authors—art historian and antique card curator Ronald Decker and former Oxford logic professor Michael Dummett—examine how the Tarot went from a deck used simply for card games to being the favored divination tool of occultists, a bridge to the spirit world, and even a map of the unconscious mind.

Looking at the people and organizations who adopted the Tarot, ranging from the Theosophical Society and Aleister Crowley to the Order of the Golden Dawn and P.D. Ouspensky, this compelling scholarly look at Tarot’s occult history describes many of the fascinating decks used by occultists as well as the secret histories of magical and occult groups of the late 19th century through contemporary times. It is one of the essential histories of the subject and a key volume for the libraries of all serious students of Tarot.

'... entertaining and enlightening... Watkins plays Aubrey to the many remarkable personalities who populated old Fleet Street, defining this lost world through a series of splendid pen portraits.'- Matthew d'Ancona, Sunday Telegraph; 'This short book is the finest account of journalism I have ever read. Literate members of the public should by it because it is the wittiest book of the year. Undergraduate students of media studies should buy it without fail, for there is more practical information in it than in a hundred lectures...'- Brian Walden, Literary Review; 'I chuckled over every page of this splendid book, the genius of which lies in the detail...'- Peregrine Worsthorne, Independent on Sunday; 'A hilarious read.' - Robert Blake, Daily Telegraph Books of the Year; 'A Short Walk Down Fleet Street... is an incomparable portrait of a particular era and way of life, and is impossible to recommend too highly.' - Peter Oborne, Sunday Express

More than you might expect
By Bruce Johnson
Very impressive book. My initial impression was that this would be another competently researched book on tarot & it's history, I soon realised that it is a lot more. This is one of the most concise histories of modern westen occultism that I have found. Even though it's not broad in scope the leval of detail is impressive. The history of Tarot is thorogh & well presented but the background on Occult orders was unexpected. Groups like the Golden Dawn & the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor are covered with enough detail to merit this being rated as a good general history of Occultism. The Church of Light & Manly Hall are treated with good biographical essays on the central characters. Even though I have been reading about these people & groups for many years I learned much new information here.

This is not a "how to" Tarot guide book but just as it says, a history. It establishes the personalities, places, & groups necessary & goes on to develop the story better than I have see it done elsewhere.

Excellent must-have reference.
By Christopher Marlowe
An excellent reference volume. A little too much time is spent on the explanation of Kabbalah and ceremonial magic for my liking - would like to have read even more biography of folk like Madeline Montalban and Rolla Nordic - but this is just a personal quibble. Dummett and Decker (particularly) are to be congratulated on their efforts. This book is a must-have for all serious tarot enthusiasts.

Why don't these guys like Dion Fortune?
By Casca
This is a comprehensive survey of Tarot cards from 1870 to 1970. Also provided is considerable information on many occult groups of this period. It is helpful that lesser known individuals and groups are covered. Serious Tarot students will find the information valuable. I am puzzled by the authors’ lopsided picture of Dion Fortune. They write her The Mystical Qabalah ‘contributes nothing to the theory of Tarot.’ Well, it’s about Kabbalah, not Tarot ( though they both overlap). In the late 1930s Dion had three exceptional occult novels published: The Winged Bull, The Goat Foot God, and The Sea Priestess. They authors dismiss these as ‘occult romances.’ These novels make a significant contribution to occult understanding. In each one a man and a woman undertake occult rituals to invoke god forms such as Pan and Isis. One gets the impression Decker and Dummett are not occultists. They say Dion became 'extremely fat.' Why make this comment? I don't recall them remarking on the weight of anyone else in the book. Dion Fortune was one of the leading occultists ever.

Good starter book
By Palle Agermark
This short book is a great book if you don't have much experience with SSRS report development for Dynamics AX and just need to get started.

The book explains how to develop reports with auto design and precision design. On a little more advanced level it also explains how to create drill through reports, matrix and chart reports. All of these areas are explained through straightforward steps to follow.

Report deployment and maintenance is also covered.

A particular nice chapter covers the UI for reports and the related data contacts. If you have trouble understanding the Model-view-controller (MVC) pattern used in AX 2012, I can really recommend this chapter.

For reference the book has a good appendix with list of common functions, and do's and don't lists for AX report development.

This book promises that it will help you learn to develop SSRS reports for Microsoft Dynamics AX, and it delivers on that promise. I had little experience with developing reporting but after reading the book I know exactly where to begin.

The book is really hands on, everything is explained using examples. That's great but in the first chapters, I felt like I needed some more text explaining what everything was and when it should be used. From the chapter about data providers on, things are more explained. Those DP's are what you probably will be using the most anyway so maybe that's not so bad.

At the end of the book there are appendices that contain useful information, so be sure the read those. They contain useful info which I would like to have seen mixed in the chapter but hey, the content is there.

If you already have experience with developing SSRS reports for AX, this book probably isn't for you, although you might learn new stuff. The book covers things experienced SSRS developers said was "impossible".

All in all this is a good book to get you started with SSRS and AX.

Nice starter guide, for AX Devs practicing SSRS reports
By Angela B
This book contains comprehensive step by step guidance for creating basic SSRS reports on Dynamics AX 2012 data (and connecting these into AX).

It's a good place to start, if you are dipping your toes into these new SSRS reports that are required for AX2012. I enjoyed reading it, and liked that it was quite light and easy to follow - as some technical publications can be very heavy going.

You will need an instance of Dynamics AX and SSRS in order to work through the examples, as the book does not offer much value for just reading along - it's more of the practical guide.
