I am still reading this book on my kindle and find it every intersting. I have heard the "Confucius said" all my life but never really knew much about him. This book tells about his life, his students and the things the Master taught his students. I would recomend it for all who are interrested in the religion he taught as well as his belief.

Not current fashion, but...

This is the translation by Leonard A. Lyall, from 1909. As such, it uses the older Wade-Giles romanization. I prefer Ames & Rosemont from more recent translations, but this is very representative of its turn-of-the-20th-century type.

Ancient wisdom

The truth, scholars emphasize, is the truth, no matter what its source, even if the speaker is of a different race, religion, sex, or culture. This being true, people should pay attention to The Sayings of Confucius.

Confucius was born in 550 BCE. The Jesuits who carried his teachings to Europe called him Confucius, although his name was K'ung Fu-tzu. This book's introduction describes his turbulent time and the people and rulers of the period. It was a time when the country was broken into independent empires, each virtually powerless. Confucius held some government positions, but spent his later years in study and teaching, and gained many disciples. He studied history with the hope that he could find a way to help his people and country, and wrote books called Book of History and Spring and Autumn, and edited Book of Poetry. He died in 479 BCE at age 71.

Confucius did not write The Sayings of Confucius. Some scholars think that it was composed by a disciple of his based on what his teacher actually said. However, there are passages that speak of events long after his death. The general consensus is that the book was composed by students or admirers around 400 BCE. The following are a sample of sayings:

* Smooth words and fawning looks are seldom found with love.
* Put faithfulness and truth first; have no friends unlike thyself; be not ashamed to mend thy ways.
* A gentleman that does not seek to eat his fill...may be said to love learning.
* Not to be known is no sorrow. My sorrow is not knowing men.
* A gentleman puts words into action first, and follows them with words.
* Learning without thought is naught; thought without learning is dangerous.
* To know what we know, and know what we do not know, is wisdom.

Not all of the sayings are wise; some are trite. There is some repetition of thoughts told with different words. Some thoughts are difficult to understand. But these facts should not stop people from reading the book and gainig new ideas.

A definitive read for any music lover of the 80's glam metal scene. Initially, I was just going to flip through it and read "the goods" she had on the acts like Motley, Stryper, Poison and GNR, but then I became enthralled at her humble beginnings, her stories of working at records stores and as a cocktail waitress in Hollywood and her (lack of) business acumen and money to support and manage these bands solely on a handshake and her firm belief they had "what it takes" to make it. She doesn't hold back. She "names names". She slams the assholes and schmucks, yet praises those with honesty, integrity and genuineness. Most captivating, is her insight and description of learning about, managing and eventually living with Axl Rose's Bi-Polar Disorder. This book will take you on a captivating, whirlwind ride of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. The title of her book encapsulates it all, "Appetite for Dysfunction"; and Vicky Hamilton takes you to an all-you-can-eat-buffet, where you leave stuffed and satisfied.

Salacious stories are few and far between

The title and cover art are purposefully meant to attract the attention of Guns N’ Roses fans – and that’s exactly how the book begins. It’s 1986, with author Vicky Hamilton attempting to get the unruly Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler over to the Geffen Records offices to sign their deal, as she was the band’s manager. Interest piqued? Well it’s about to be put on hold as the next several chapters go back to Vicky’s “Hillbilly Roots” in West Virginia and Indiana. At age 21, Hamilton moves to Los Angeles and reader interest is renewed when she gets hired on as a management consultant for M�tley Cr�e – a job without pay. After being replaced by Doc McGhee and Doug Thaler, Hamilton went on to work with Stryper, Poison and eventually Guns N’ Roses. At one point the whole band was living in her apartment; yet salacious stories are few and far between. That being said, a $1,000,000 lawsuit was the end result.

Landing a highly coveted A&R position with Geffen, Hamilton has brief liaisons with Faster Pussycat, Enuff Z’Nuff and Salty Dog. By this point Vicky “stayed stoned morning, noon and night;” her love affair with marijuana front and center. After a successful stint with Capitol Records, Hamilton hits “financial and emotional bottom.” Turning to dog-walking as a way to make money, Vicky finds sobriety – along with yoga, prayer and meditation. Those looking for the dirt (pun intended) won’t find much of it within these pages. Despite being a significant player in the ‘80s era of excess, Hamilton’s book is much more about her personal highs and lows, as opposed to the opulent decadence surrounding the bands she guided through the Sunset Strip.

Having been along for some of this ride, I can tell you it is a blast to read and relive the moments! All that Vicky has seen and done will amaze all readers. It's wonderfully written with truth and humor. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you love rock music and want a real inside peek at what went down for Vicky, this is the best read possible!!

The author clearly states that she plays fast and loose with historical details and dates. This allows readers to be swept along by the story and not be bothered by the accuracy of events or dates. Grand Duchess Catherine of Russia—the future Catherine the Great—has come a long way since her days as a minor Prussian princess. At the Russian royal court, she must navigate the complexities of court life to keep her hopes of ruling Russia alive. She falls in and out of favor with the empress, who treats Catherine as a pawn useful only for producing an heir. Her marriage to Grand Duke Peter is a sham, mostly due to Peter's completely reprehensible behavior. He is childish and mercurial, which endears him to no one. Catherine comes across as intelligent, brave, and resilient, despite her cruel circumstances. She often sees herself sacrificing personal character for the greater good of Russia. The story moves quickly, and the characters use modern, casual dialogue. Because the author is so straightforward regarding her use of authorial license, historical details blur together. Ficklin does stay true to the large sexual appetites of her historical figures—there are a great number of sexual situations. Even Better Than The First

The story just gets better and better and I loved this book even more than the first as it takes us further into the future as Catherine is now married to Peter and we witness more of her suffering. I was immediately swept away by the intrigue and romance. Well written plot with superbly developed characters that seem larger than life. I cannot wait to get ensnared in the third book. I highly recommend this author's books.

Unlike other trilogies, this is a strong middle entry and a quite enjoyable read (4 stars)

"Queen of Tomorrow" did not disappoint. For me, the second novel in a trilogy is usually where a series comes to die, but this book equaled, indeed surpassed "Queen of Someday" in terms of plot, storytelling and character.

The pace was quick and breezy, just as the first novel was, with dialogue for today's audience. No formal, stilted language of Imperial Russia here. The characters were consistent from one book to another. The plot was full of the court intrigue we first came to know in QoS, and the best parts for me, were how Catherine deftly, and intelligently is able to navigate the tricky (and potentially deadly) machinations of court life.

There were only two things that gave me pause: first, so some random guy shows up, pledges his loyalty to you above all else, and boom - he's now your personal bodyguard? Is it really that easy? Don't get me wrong, I liked Grigori just fine, but had to give this the side eye.

The second part of the novel that didn't work for me was (SPOILER) the dropped storyline of trying to find out who pushed Catherine down the stairs, resulting in her miscarriage. Both she and Peter seemed so determined to root out the devil who caused the loss of the precious heir to the throne, then nothing...Catherine suspects Elizabetta as the culprit but doesn't seem to do anything to find out the truth, besides rouse the feelings of her countrymen/women at a dinner so as to get their passive help in finding out who done the deed. END SPOILER

But I cannot lie - my favorite parts of the novel involve Catherine and Sergei. I shipped them in the first novel and am so very glad to see their relationship is still going strong. I just love how these two are each other's best allies, confidantes, and of course, their smoking hot er, 'interactions' (well as hot as can be for a YA novel without getting into anything too graphic).

Speaking of Sergei, something that surprised me in a good way was something that didn't happen in this book. Given how forceful Catherine was in declaring to him that as long as he lived, she would not love nor bed another, I felt for sure Sergei wouldn't live to the end of the book. Catherine's pronouncements read to me as extremely anvilicious, so it was a nice surprise that he was still alive (and as tight as ever with Catherine) by novel's end.

I cannot wait to read the third and final novel. I have faith Sherry Ficklin will do the end of the series justice.

Dying to read book 3!

Book #2 has all of the intrigue, history, and romance that I loved about the first one. Things were a little different this time around though. Peter's wrath gets more intense and there's some pretty dark stuff that readers will have to deal with. The story takes you back and forth between two castles and courts. I was surprised to find out I didn't want to leave Winter Palace as much. After reading the first book, it kind of felt like home.

There is great character development for our dear little Sophie. After the heartbreaking events in Queen of Someday, she is certainly hardened. She has a lot of tough decisions to make and there isn't always a "right one". After she is finally pushed to her breaking point, she resolves to do something I don't think anyone saw coming.

Ficklin's story telling is beautiful and brilliant, as always, and I didn't want this book to end. I think the only real problem I have with these books is that they're too short! I'm definitely getting the conclusion, Queen of Always, soon, so catch up to me and watch out for the review!

Compelling evidence to support cancer as a metabolic disease

Dr. Seyfried provides compelling evidence that cancer is a metabolic disease (NOT a genetic disease), and this has major implications for the treatment and prevention of cancer.

According to Otto Warburg's theory of cancer, mitochondrial dysfunction is the origin of cancer. Dr. Seyfried has amassed extensive evidence to support Warburg's theory and advances the idea that cancer arises from defects in energy metabolism (mitochondrial dysfunction), and that this metabolic dysfunction triggers genomic instability, activates oncogenes and inactivating tumor suppressor genes. The author does an incredible job at convincing the reader that healthy mitochondria are the ultimate tumor suppressor.

It's clear that the strategy to treat cancer as a genetic disease is not working following metastasis of solid primary tumors, but this fuels the pharmaceutical industry. Enormous amounts of money are spent on large cancer genome projects, but this has not advanced our understanding or treatment of cancer as expected. The cancer genome project has actually created more confusion amongst cancer researchers, and this is very clear if one reads the literature. On the other hand, when cancer is viewed as a metabolic disease the strategies to treat and prevent cancer become incredibly simplistic and economical. For example, animals studies, case reports and anecdotal evidence demonstrate that metabolic therapies that lower blood glucose and elevate ketones will quickly reduce tumor growth, extend lifespan and in some cases cause complete remission. This strategy is effective because cancer cells are fueled by glucose and lack the ability to derive energy from ketones due to mitochondrial defects. Metabolic therapies exploit the mitochondrial defects associated with cancer by targeting glucose metabolism, reducing insulin and elevating ketones. These therapies are simple and include "therapeutic fasting", calorie restricted ketogenic diets and relatively cheap and safe drugs that target glycolysis, insulin and other cancer-specific metabolic pathways. The information in this book is valuable to patients and supported by extensive references. This book is technical (in parts), but the author has the ability to describe complicated processes with elegant simplicity.

I read this book immediately after reading "The Secret History of the War on Cancer" and "The Emperor of All Maladies". These are excellent books, but I found Dr. Seyfried's book to be more informative and empowering because it gives the reader clear evidence for the cause of cancer and highly effective strategies to prevent and treat the disease.

I would recommend this book to all cancer researchers, oncologists and layman interested in understanding the origin, management and treatment of cancer as a metabolic disease. This book will also be an extremely valuable resource for patients diagnosed with cancer.

The Most Important Book about Cancer Cell Metabolism

Seyfried's "Cancer as a Metabolic Disease" is the most significant book I have read in my 50 years in this field. It should be required reading of all cancer specialists, physicians in general, scientific researchers in the field of cancer and for medical students. I cannot overstate what a valuable contribution Thomas Seyfried has made in writing this masterpiece.

a new look at caloric restriction and cancer

It has been known for a long time that caloric restriction led to longevity but also that it stopped cancer growth, some completely and many partial suppression with later recurrences.

Dr. Seyfried spent his whole career looking at an old concept defining cancer as a metabolic abnormality (Warburg). The fact that our PET scans show high glucose uptake in almost all types of cancer proves that cancers have a unique metabolic abnormality unlike normal differentiated cells.
