Definitely a Starting Place

I guess I was hoping for a little bit more with this book, although it's a very good starting point for people who have been diagnoses as having prediabetes and their families. In this case, it's my husband with the diagnosis, but I wanted a better understanding of what's going on in his body and how I can help. Certainly Dr. Rubin does a good job of laying out just how prediabetes impacts the body, and even holds out hope that people who take the right steps can avoid going into full-fledged diabetes or perhaps improve their physical condition to a point where they're handling glucose correctly. I also particularly liked his 90-day plan for how prediabetics can turn their lives around through a combination of diet and exercise; I've even started using some of his weightlifting routine in my own workouts.

There are a few parts of the book that bother me, though. In many chapters, he offers special recommendations for young people and seniors, even though I'm sure the vast majority of his readers are neither. He takes on sugar-free soda without really justifying his opposition to it. Dr. Rubin also seems to be a bit more casual about weight-loss surgery than I would surely be, although he does point out the risks and side-effects involved. And, I really wish he had included at least a few more recipes and additional hints on cooking for someone to cut down on carbohydrates and sugar -- although I understand he has another book out for that.

Obviously, this is a topic I'll keep on researching, and I'm grateful we have an appointment scheduled with a dietitian. It's definitely a starting place, but it's not going to tell you all you need to know.

Excellent Source of Information

I appreciated learning how I got to this point, and the author explains several methods for dealing with it. It's written by a doctor, and he writes like a lay-person so you can understand what he's talking about. I recommend this highly if you, like me, have been told that you're pre-diabetic, or even if you'd like to avoid that diagnosis altogether.

Great information

While searching for more information about how to eat in order to avoid developing diabetes, I thought this book might do the trick. It did. More than mere fluff and generalizations, this book helped me understand the proper way to eat - the combinations to adopt and why they work - in order to prevent developing diabetes. The balance of exercise and balanced eating became clear and the suggestions and recipes were easy to understand and incorporate into my daily living. I am a great cook, so I wanted to learn the basics of life and food choices more than having recipes and daily food plans to follow. This book enabled that.

very well done

The piano specialist at my local sheet music store informs me this is currently the best-selling piano method for adults. It's not hard to see why.

I had a student who was going through Bastien's adult method, slogging along. I switched him to this one, and he started making sparkling progress. After a few weeks, I asked him what he was doing differently. He told me he just loved this book.

As a teacher, I can tell you this book doesn't go as deep as the Alfred's. It's only two books, whereas not only is the Alfred's three, but goes a lot deeper with the student before pronouncing him finished. At the end of book 3 of Alfred's, for example, the author proposes you play Fur Elise and Toccata in D Minor in their original forms. There's no way you're going to be able to do that after merely going through the 2 Faber books.

But I would say this book does have an advantage over the Alfred's: it chips away at your piano ignorance, so to speak. Every lesson is short and gradually incremental. There are no monsters in the book to stare down a student and discourage him. No, songs look easy to play and you get the feeling of making swift progress without as much intimidation.

Faber Piano books

If you are an adult learning to play piano (as I am), the Faber books are the BEST. I started with the Book 1 (that my piano teacher purchased for my first lesson) and quickly moved through the lessons that included theory, chords, simple t(but familiar) tunes to songs that required a bit more diligent practice. The combination of music theory, the various chords and types of chords (such as blocked, arpegiated, Alberti bass) are explained, you have practice exercises, and then add them to simple songs. Along the way you are introduced to adding the pedal to songs. The second book continues where the first book stopped and continues to be a FANTASTIC learning tool. (I am a college professor and appreciate good educational tools). Highly recommend this book and its predecessor, Book one (be sure it is the All-In-One book so it includes theory, chords, as well as performance pieces).

About the Author
Joel Feinberg (Professor Emeritus, late of University of Arizona) was widely recognized as one of America's leading political and social philosophers. Acclaimed both for his ground-breaking scholarship and his exemplary teaching skills, Feinberg published widely on topics such as individual rights, legal theory, capital punishment, the treatment of the mentally ill, civil disobedience, and environmental ethics. Before joining the University of Arizona faculty, he taught at Brown, Princeton, and Rockefeller universities. Feinberg was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1987-88 to work in Japan and served as chairman of the National Board of Officers in the American Philosophical Association in the mid-1980s. Some of the royalties from Reason and Responsibility have been used to establish the Regents Professor Joel Feinberg Dissertation Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Arizona.

Russ Shafer-Landau received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he focuses on ethical theory and philosophy of the law. He is the author of THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ETHICS; MORAL REALISM; A DEFENCE; AND WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GOOD AND EVIL? He also serves as series editor for Oxford Studies in Metaethics.

it's really good. It's not dry

For a textbook, it's really good. It's not dry. It is made of short essays and it does not go into too many details. It just gives the information. Weirdest textbook I have every read.

Half The Book is Missing on the Kindle Edition

I bought the kindle edition because this book was assigned as a textbook for my Philosophy class. When I downloaded and opened it up I noticed that half the readings that were assigned to me were actually not in the book at all, instead there was "Text not available due to copyright restrictions" typed up all over dozens of pages.
I think Amazon should at least warn us about this before claiming that an entire book, at almost the same price as the hard copy, is available for digital download.
Needless to say, I am disappointed.

The book itself, however, is a good read, the selected articles are thought provoking and will leave you pondering about the ideas presented for days to come. One of my favorite pieces is John Pollock's "A Brain in a Vat"... too bad that it was also missing from the kindle edition.

I really didn't expect this from a company that I thought to be so reliable and thus (in my opinion and reasoning) gaining huge popularity - but i didn't know that this could happen and, moreover, I didn't know that I didn't know that this could happen.
I just couldn't resist lol

The rental item itself was noticeably used on the outside and somewhat on the inside as well. The textbook itself had some interesting readings and was helpful in learning about the basics of philosophy.

This unremarkable African American coming-of-age story, originally published by a small press in 1993 (as was Tyree's first novel, Capital City), tracks Tracy Ellison from her sixth birthday party in 1977 to her 17th birthday. Tracy grows up in the middle-class Philadelphia suburb of Germantown. The daughter of a pharmacist and a dietitian, she is pretty and intelligent, armed with solid self-esteem and a sassy mouth. Like most of her friends, she's also boy crazy, and readers watch as her physical maturation leads to increasing sexual activity. While experiencing the indulgent, hip-hop 1980s and the insidious effects of the cocaine economy that flourishes in black communities, Tracy must also come to terms with her parents' separation. Tyree captures black language as it is spoken among peers; like Terry Macmillan he uses scatological references without restraint. The conversation of youngsters caught in a highly pressured sexual atmosphere, test-driving their sexuality long before they're old enough for a license, is profane and vivid. The narrative flow is often disrupted by too many italics and slang-defining asides, and by a rocky imbalance between neutral narration and vernacular. The real problem here is a crucial lack of depth; even when Tracy's teenage chatter gives way to some soul-searching questions, the queries themselves and the answers to them are trite and superficial. The dialog in this coming-of-age African American story by Tyree, who self-published two books before getting his big break, is some of the best this reviewer has read in a long time. Tyree has a way making each phrase of every conversation true to life, whether spoken by a child or an adult. The story begins at Tracy Ellison's sixth birthday party. We follow her through her parent's shaky marriage to grade school and high school. Although the story does not venture much beyond Tracey's boy-chasing escapades and an occasional side plot about her next-door-neighbor, Raheema, the book is an entertaining diversion. Tyree writes so well that readers will put up with Tracey, who is selfish and often unkind. The author captures growing up in the Eighties with a subtle and finely rendered backdrop of songs and mischief reminiscent of the era. This should be enough to keep folks reading to the mildly rushed ending while hoping that the nasty little "flyy girl," Tracy, learns a few lessons along the way. Tyree's debut is much longer than a YA novel, and far more vulgar, but the subject is pure teen: The ins and outs of dating matched up with a guide to fashion dos and don'ts. The further twist is that it's set in a largely black neighborhood of Philadelphia, where whites exist only as an excuse for some silly Afrocentric theorizing. At the heart of this morality tale is Tracy Ellison, a young girl whose adolescence and teenage years are depicted largely as a monotonous soap opera. The daughter of hardworking parents, Tracy lives in Germantown, a middle-class neighborhood, and does well in school. Her problems stem mainly from boys, and for most of her young life, she's truly boy-crazy. So much so, that this overlong narrative records in dull detail her years of flirting, courting, kissing, and having sex--``a game of choosing and chasing and dumping.'' By 13, she's tall, curvaceous, and cunning; she ``had to have whomever she wanted right away.'' That includes a wide range of eager young men, from the awkward and fumbling Bruce to the violent thief Timmy. With time, Tracy learns not to give it out without getting things in return, even though her behavior shocks her lifelong neighbor, Raheema, a studious girl who postpones her deflowering. What finally turns Tracy around, though, is the sad example of Raheema's older sister, who has become a crack whore. In this tightly ordered universe, bad living leads to addiction, unwanted pregnancy, jail, or death. Tracy also comes under the influence of some college girls who introduce her to the world of Kente cloth and the Minister Farrakhan. Tyree's shapeless docudrama seems written for an audience he intends to shock--why else would he pause so often (and so awkwardly) to translate slang terms that any watcher of Moesha would know? Love this book . I can read it over & over again

I like this book alot . Ive first read it my sophomore year . Its about a very sultry girl named Tracy & I characterize her as a coquette who knows how to flatter & manipulate men w/ her charms in order to get what she wants. She's also very vain & conceited because she likes showing herself off & always makes sure she never leaves out the house looking sexy & flyy so she can shine more attention on herself. She looks up to raheema's older & seductive sister Mercedes, who taught her to have guys trick off their cash on her in exchange for gifts. Another thing I would like to add is that Tracy also reminds me of the main character Saucy ( the blasian ( black & asian ) girl from the book "Thong on fire" by noire bc they are alike in so many ways ; very seductive girls . I like reading books about young sirens bc I'm a siren myself

Im having a hard time finishing this book. It was highly recommended by an older friend of mine but i just cant finish this book. I usually try to finish any book I purchased (especially after paying $5+) before buying another but i just cant. i was only able to read about 25% of this book. im not sure if it gets better toward the middle but for now.. i'm reading something else.

This is one of the first books that I ever read. Being from South Jersey, I spent a lot of time visiting and hanging out in Philadelphia where the book is written. I must say that Omar Tyree captures the essence of Philadelphia, PA and all of its surrounding cities.Every character in the book seemed to be believable; it's as if these were the people who lived arround the corner from you (if you lived in Phila or nearby). This is definitely a classic read. I've recommended this book to several people at my job who are considering picking up a book for the first time. The way that Omar Tyree paints pictures with his words. I read this book 4 years ago, and it's still one of the best books I've ever read (and I read approximately 40 books each year). Flyy Girl is definitely a page-turner. A unique perspective of life in an era that I grew up in. (The 80's)...

About the Author
Dr Yves Crama is Professor of Operations Research and Production Management and the former Director General of the HEC Management School of the University of Li�ge, Belgium. He is widely recognized as a prominent expert in the field of Boolean functions, combinatorial optimization and operations research, and he has coauthored more than 70 papers and three books on these subjects. Dr Crama is a member of the Editorial Board of Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization, the Journal of Scheduling and 4OR - the quarterly journal of the Belgian, French and Italian Operations Research Societies.

The late Peter L. Hammer (1936-2006) was a Professor of Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Management Science and Information Systems at Rutgers University and the Director of Rutgers University Center for Operations Research (RUTCOR). He was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journals Annals of Operations Research, Discrete Mathematics, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization and Electronic Notes in Discrete Mathematics. Dr Hammer was the initiator of numerous pioneering investigations of the use of Boolean functions in operations research and related areas, of the theory of pseudo-Boolean functions, and of the logical analysis of data. He published more than 240 papers and 19 books on these topics.
