Delightful punishment...

Love is a punishment, says Yourcenar, and in some intellectual and emotive way this book is one. I've read all of her books, and this is her most felt, chirurgically precise, passionate and torn aproach to what love is and represents in all the roles we - human beings - play at one time or another in our lives. All the possible deceptions, miscommunications and broken hearts are hold in these pages, through the reconstruction and modernization of some greek myths such as Antigone, Achilles and Patroclus, Sapho, and Maria Magdalena (ok, she was not greek!). Along with "Memoires of Adrian" and "Zenon", this is a must-have from Yourcenar.

Intertwining the stories are excerpts from Yournenar's own journal taken from the time during which she had written the stories. Achingly familiar to anyone recovering from a broken heart, Yourcenar marries the heartache of this century's woman to women throughout the ages.

This book, also if is not so take in consideration in the critical analysis of M.Yourcenar, is the more next at my opinion, to the sensibility of this extraordinary writer. The tranfiguration of the reality in the world of the grecian mytology (except the episod of Maria Magdalena) is a very suffer parable of the human condition. who or what is the con ???

I bought this book wanting to gain an insight to current arts practice. I'm unclear as to how any one can take this writing by Julian Spalding seriously. It is fair enough to have an opinion, but opinions need to be backed up, supported & thought through. Throughout the book Spalding makes references to artists & their work, but doesn't include any detail or any context to the work. The writing appears more like a name dropping dinner party guest who actually has never met or been in the same room as the person. Putting David Hockney on par with Michelangelo is a reflection of the depth (or indeed, the lack) of analysis and critical thinking this book revels in.

To anyone seriously wanting to investigate contemporary art, its artists, art & the world surrounding it, this book offers nothing other than the what appears to be a very personal attack.

Alas, it was released on April 1st, so maybe this conceptual provocation is really a work of art in itself...

Good opinion but without background or context

This is a short but nicely-written presentation of the author's opinions. He is critical of much modern art and of the modern art market. I happen to agree with him. The problem is that his book requires, rather than provides, an understanding of art or the market. For that I recommend Don Thompson's The Twelve Million Dollar Stuffed Shark. Reading that book, though, makes Spalding's superfluous unless you want to read confirmation of Thompson's opinions from an art expert (Thompson is an economist).

Opinionated and enjoyable; maybe to the point too

Conceptual art is not all rubbish. But much of it is a put on job. Spalding is right on. And describes the system that supports it with brutal honesty. Shit in a can at the Tate? Then again, if a collection needs to reflect the times so be it. The poor conservation expert though . . .

Nice overview

I found this book to be a useful one - it nicely covers all the pandas/finance basics. If your're a bit of a novice in either one, this book provides a nice introduction. It doesn't waste time with a Python introduction or other book-filling topics. It shows how to do all of the most useful operations in pandas as they relate to finance. Then it goes into options, portfolio theory, and applying pandas to a Google Trends project. I particularly liked the section on Zipline, a back-testing library. It was a little clearer than the documentation. The part where Quandl is used is also nice.

That said, if you dug around the internet, you could probably cobble these examples together. Also, it doesn't really go into either pandas or finance too deeply. I don't hold those against the book - it can't be all things to all people. The book makes for a nice overview of the relevant topics - but expect an overview.

Excellent intro to Pandas

I would recommend this book as a good basic intro to the fundamentals of Pandas even if you're not particularly interested in applying it to finance. I have read portions of a few others and this authors style is very concise and to the point on Series and DataFrames, and in particular on indexing of both.

Gr 7 Up-The archetypal sea-faring adventure story is given another rousing and dramatic rendition in this quickly paced abridged entry in Hodder's top-flight Classic Collection series. The critical plot and subplot threads have been beautifully retained, and all the classic lines like "shiver me timbers" have been included. Stalwart English actor Richard Griffiths handles the bulk of the narrative chores flawlessly and is particularly effective in his pacing. He is capably assisted by Gareth Armstrong who, inexplicably, is uncredited on the cassette case. The subtle use of occasional sound effects such as gulls, lapping waves, and cannon and gunshot enhances this superb version of Stevenson's masterpiece. A Great Introduction to Classic Literature

I am a high school English teacher, and I am a huge fan of the original Treasure Island. That said, I love the Classic Start series as a mother who believes in introducing my children to the classics from a very early age. I began using the series with my daughter when she was five. We have read Black Beauty, The Little Princess, Heidi, and Pollyanna to name a few, so I am very familiar with the content of the series, and I keep coming back for more.

My son just turned six. There is no way that he would be able to sit through nor understand the original, but with this abridged version, he not only becomes familiar with the story, he falls in love with it as well. We began reading Treasure Island last night, and he begged for more and more. Finally, after six chapters I insisted that I needed to read to his older sister. While I did, this little kindegartner slugged through another chapter, struggling over every word to try to get more of the story. I couldn't have been more thrilled; that is the love of reading and the love of good literature with which I am trying to bless my children.

Classic Starts are a fantastic way to begin, in my opinion. I see no difference between a beginning pianist first learning an easy version of a classical piano concerto and a young reader first introduced to an abridged version of a classic that, in it's original form would be above both his context and vocabulary level. I am sure that when my son does encounter the original, and he will--I'll make sure of that--he will not only be more ready, he will be more excited to get the rest of the story, thanks to his familiarity with and fondness for Billy Bones, Jim, and Long John Silver. Beware - this version is heavily abridged.

Please note: Treasure Island
This title is heavily abridged and aimed at children but, the Amazon title doesn't tell you this. From the inside cover of the book:

"This Great classic for Children by Dalmation press has been carefully condensed and adapted from the original version ... We kept the well-known phrases for you. We kept the author's style. And we kept the important imagery and heart of the tale."

With its large font and many illustrations the book comes out to 181 pages; whereas, the Sterling Classic unabridged with its regular sized font and no illustrations comes out to 232 pages. This gives an indication of how condensed this version is.

This one has its place as a kids version and should be clearly marked as such.

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!

Treasure Island is perhaps THE classic pirate's tale. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.

Jim Hawkins is the hero of the story and he's a good lad with a stout heart. Long John Silver is the real star, however, and his character is a fascinating character study in moral ambiguity... or perhaps a study in amoral perfection. The pirate language is good and thick but this edition has plenty of notes to help you decipher some of the references that have become too obscure for today's readers. The plot moves along very briskly with no wasted scenes.

In short, Treasure Island well deserves its status as a beloved classic. It's a story of suspense and adventure that can be enjoyed at a child's level, but has substance for adults as well. I would recommend without reserve it to virtually anyone.
