Dams and What They Wrought
By Pamela Robinson
"Dams (Library of Congress Visual Sourcebooks)" is an important work that examines the impact of the behemoth structures on the human and geographical landscape throughout the United States.

Author Christine Macy weaves an account of how some of the more than 2.5 million dams have been built, accompanied by hundreds of photos, maps and charts detailing their construction. The black and white photos show changing landscapes, men and machines at work on the structures and the resulting changes in water flow and supply. The geological, political, engineering and human to build and then adjust to the dams are all part of the story as new projects created or denied development to huge areas of the country. Among the major projects are those of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Hoover Dam and those in the Northwest. As the book notes, dams are both welcomed and rejected, sometimes condemned as destroyers of nature, other times desired for their provision of irrigation for agriculture and human life.

Their importance in the development of the country cannot be overstated, especially in areas that either experienced disastrous flooding or droughts that prevented the growth of the human population.

The book is divided into eight geographical areas or watersheds, with explanations of how hydroelectric, mill, reservoir and other dams operate, and is part of the Norton/Library of Congress series. Included in the book is a CD containing hundreds of images, including many in color, data files and records.

Another excellent discourse from this spiritual guru
By Amazon Customer
I can't say enough about the spiritual integrity of this man. He LIVED what he preached and essentially proved that the only way you can reap the benefits of spirituality is to LIVE the principles thoroughly in your life. There are no shortcuts in this way of life and he expounds on the subject better than anyone else I've read. If you're serious about spirituality, you can't go wrong with anything by Joel Goldsmith.

On May 5, 1527 Spanish, German, and Italian troops under the banner of the Holy Roman Emperor swarmed into Rome. Until December, when they were finally dispersed by plague, these troops plundered, tortured, raped, and murdered in the defenseless capital of Christendom. "The sack of Rome in 1527 was an event of tragic and decisive importance. It brought the Renaissance, the greatest period in Italian history, to its sudden and catastrophic end. We are fortunate to possess many eyewitness accounts of this extraordinary event. Only one contemporary account, however, offers an overview of the political and military situation in Italy that culminated in the sack of Rome. That account is here translated for the first time." (Introduction) Illustrated, maps, introduction, glossary, afterword, bibliography. 2nd printing.

Review
"Italica Press had made yet another invaluable contribution to European history with the translation and publication of Guicciardini's history. James H. Mc Gregor should also be commended for making his unique discovery and for his thoughtful introduction." -- L'Italo-Americano

"Mc Gregor has done the historical world an impressive favor in translating and editing a major work on the Italian post-Renaissance." (Small Press) "Mc Gregor's smooth translation, the first ever into English, willbe useful not only for undergraduate instruction but also for convenient preliminary consultation by advanced scholars. This volume constitutes an exceptionally useful tool for teaching undergraduates not only about the Sack of Rome, but also about early sixteenth-century Italian politics and about the conventions of Renaissance historical writing. Mc Gregor deserves our gratitude." -- Renaissance Quarterly

"Mc Gregor'stranslation is eminently readable. His introduction and afterword provide useful information on the historical background, both political and military. Mc Gregor has done a service to the field of Renaissance studies by making Luigi Guicciardini's account of the Sack available to an English-reading audience." -- Catholic Historical Review

Translated history of the Sack of Rome
By Norm Smith
The Sack of Rome in 1527 was a landmark event for contemporaries, even if it is little known today. This is an interesting book that gives the immediate background and details of that event.

The translation is pleasant to read and well presented.

There are not many translations of 16th century histories so this is a welcome addition.

Werewolves: Lycanthropy and Legend, by Sabine Baring-gould

IN Norway and Iceland certain men were said to be eigi einhamir, not of one skin, an idea which had its roots in paganism. The full form of this strange superstition was, that men could take upon them other bodies, and the natures of those beings whose bodies they assumed. The second adopted shape was called by the same name as the original shape, hamr, and the expression made use of to designate the transition from one body to another, was at skipta hmum, or at hamaz; whilst the expedition made in the second form, was the hamfr. By this transfiguration extraordinary powers were acquired; the natural strength of the individual was doubled, or quadrupled; he acquired the strength of the beast in whose body he travelled, in addition to his own, and a man thus invigorated was called hamrammr.

About the Author
Elliott O'Donnell (February 27, 1872 - May 8, 1965) was an Irish author known primarily for his books about ghosts. He claimed to have seen a ghost, described as an elemental figure covered with spots, when he was five years old. He also claimed to have been strangled by a mysterious phantom in Dublin. He claimed descent from Irish chieftains of ancient times, including Niall of the Nine Hostages (the King Arthur of Irish folklore) and Red Hugh, who fought the English in the sixteenth century. O'Donnell was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, England, and later at Queen's Service Academy, Dublin, Ireland. In later life he became a ghost hunter. His first book, written in his spare time, was a psychic thriller titled "For Satan's Sake" (1904). From this point onward, he became a writer. He wrote several popular novels, including an occult fantasy, "The Sorcery Club" (1912) but specialised in what were claimed as true stories of ghosts and hauntings. O'Donnell wrote material for numerous magazines, including "Hutchinson Story Magazine, The Novel Magazine, The Idler, Weekly Tale-Teller, Hutchinson's Mystery-Story Magazine, Pearson's Magazine, Lilliput" and "Weird Tales". As he became known as an authority on the supernatural, he was called upon as a ghost hunter. He also lectured and broadcast (radio and television) on the paranormal in Britain and the United States. In addition to his more than 50 books, he wrote scores of articles and stories for national newspapers and magazines.

very interesting
By Robert Sizemore
I got this book for Christmas. I must say it is interesting. I agree with the other reviews, as it was a bit cumbersome to read at times. I guess that comes from the writing style, as the book was first published in the early 1900's. If your interested in the legend and myth of werewolves this book is priceless. It hasn't been watered down by tons of hollywood or mainstream info. The chapter that actually tells you how to become a werewolf was great. If I can find some raw opium and a wolf skin belt I'm in business!!

Incredible!
By Nightshade
This volume is of incredible value from both an historical perspective and from a study of lycanthropy world-view as well. Comprehensive. I would highly recommend it to anyone delving into this fascinating behavioral syndrome and the history attached to it. Originally published in 1912 (I believe), you will find it heavy to read now and then but the insights gained are worth the effort. Not a "neo-werewolf" volume! Don't bother if you think Oz on Buffy the Vampire Slayer defines werewolves.

Great source for old werewolf legends!
By Wlfe
This book, originally published in 1912, was written by a British genealogist and historian Elliot O'Donnell. The information gathered within this book comes from old legends and folk stories that have circulated in Europe. There is a brief mention of other shapechangers, like were-leopards, -tigers and -bears, but the book clearly centers around "werwolves".

Most of the information is given in the form of stories and legends, they are a very interesting read. As you read the stories, you can notice how most of the stories have a moral to them, in the same way as fairytales tend to have. You can almost imagine how these stories have been told in the dark to scare children and to teach them things like not to be too vain and proud.

The book also contains some information on specific topics, like on how to become a werewolf, what is the spiritual side of them and if exorcism would work on a werewolf. The book has different chapters for some countries, including places such as Germany, Spain, British Isles, France and Finland.

I highly recommend this book for those interested in the old were-legends. The stories prevent it from being a dry read, even if the style of writing might sound a bit old. Highly recommended for those truly interested in werewolves!

Travis Jacobs could do anything for eight seconds. At least, that's what he told himself every time he climbed up the side of a bull chute. Tonight's Vegas crowd was loud and enthusiastic, their attention centered on the current rider being bucked around the arena by Devil's Draw.

Putting the other cowboys in the competition from his mind, he looked at Esquire below him, checking for any sign of agitation. Then he rolled his cuffs up a couple of turns, pulled his brown Stetson low and tugged a worn, leather glove onto his right hand.

The crowd groaned in sympathy a mere second before the horn sounded, telling Travis that Buckwheat Dawson had come off the bull. Up next, Travis swung his leg over the chute rail and drew a bracing breath. While Karl Schmitty held the rope, he adjusted the rigging and wrapped his hand. Wasting no time, he slid up square on the bull and gave a sharp nod to the gate operator.

The chute opened, and all four of Esquire's feet instantly left the ground. The Brahma shot out into the arena then straight up in the air under the bright lights. The crowd roared its pleasure as the black bull twisted left, hind feet reaching high, while Travis leaned back, spurred, his arm up, muscles pumped, fighting for all he was worth to keep himself square on the animal's back.

Esquire turned right, twisting beneath Travis, shaking him as if he was a bothersome gnat. Three seconds turned to four. Travis's hand burned against the rope, and his wrist felt like it was about to dislocate. The strain sent a branching iron along his spine, but he also felt completely and totally alive. For a brief space of time, life was reduced to its essence. Nothing mattered but the battle between Travis and the bull.

Esquire made an abrupt left turn, nearly unseating Travis, but he kept his form. His hat flew off into the dust. The blaring music and the roar of the crowd disappeared, obliterated by the pulse of blood pumping past his ears.

The horn sounded just before Esquire made one final leap, unseating Travis, sending him catapulting through the air. Travis summersaulted, grazing the bull's left horn, quickly twisting his body to avoid hitting the ground head-on. His shoulder came down first, with his back taking the brunt of the impact. As the air whooshed out of his lungs, a face in the crowd danced before his eyes.

Danielle? What the heck was Danielle doing in Vegas?

Then Esquire's menacing form filled his vision, and he leaped to his feet. Corey Samson, one of the bullfighters, jumped between them, distracting the animal while Travis sprinted to the fence.

Glancing back, he realized Danielle had to be a figment of his imagination. The crowd was nowhere near close enough for him to recognize a particular face. He heaved himself over the top of the fence and jumped to the ground on the other side.

"Nice one." Buckwheat clapped him good-naturedly on the back.

"Hey, Travis," Corey yelled from inside the arena.

Travis turned to see Corey toss him his hat. He caught the Stetson in midair, and Corey gave him a thumbs-up.

"Ninety-one point three," the announcer cried into the sound system.

The crowd roared louder, while lasers and colored spotlights circled the arena, the music coming up once more. Travis was the night's last rider, meaning he'd just won ten thousand dollars.

He stuffed his hat on his head and vaulted back over the fence onto the thick dirt, waving to the crowd and accepting the congratulations of the clowns and cowboys.

"You have got to go pro," Corey shouted in his ear.

"Just blowin' off some steam," Travis responded, keeping his grin firmly in place for the spectators, knowing he'd be projected onto the Jumbotron.

His older brother, Seth, had recently been married, and he'd committed his next three years to working on the Lyndon Valley railway project. Responsibility for the family's Colorado cattle ranch now rested completely on Travis's shoulders. Faced with that looming reality, he'd discovered he had a few wild oats left to sow.

"You could make a lot of money on the circuit," said Corey.

Travis let himself fantasize for a minute about going on the road as a professional bull rider. The image was tantalizing-to be footloose and fancy free, no cattle to tend, no ranch hands, no bills, no responsibilities. He'd ride a couple of times a week, hit the clubs, meet friendly women. There were no bleak, dusty, hick towns on this particular rodeo circuit. It was all bright lights and five-star hotels.

For a moment, he resented the lost opportunity. But he forcibly swallowed his own frustration. If he'd wanted to be a bull rider, he should have spoken up before now. While his brother and sisters were all choosing their own life paths, Travis should have said something about leaving the ranch. But it was too late. He was the last Jacobs cowboy, and somebody had to run the place.

A small crowd had gathered in the middle of the arena to celebrate his win. He unzipped his flak jacket to circulate a little air. Then he accepted the prize buckle and the check from the event manager and gave a final wave of his hat to the crowd.

Mind still mulling what might have been, he turned and fell into step beside Corey, their boots puffing up dust as they moved toward the gate.

"How long have you been on the road?" he found himself asking the bullfighter.

"Nearly ten years now," Corey responded. "Started when I was seventeen."

"You ever get tired of it?"

"What's to get tired? The excitement? The adventure? The women?"

Travis stuffed the check in his shirt pocket. "You know what I mean."

"Yeah, I know. When I get tired of the wheels turning, I go back to the folks' place in New Mexico for a while."

"Ever tempted to stay there?" Travis was trying to reassure himself that life on the road got old, that all men eventually wanted a real home.

Corey shook his head. "Nope. Though, last trip home, there was this pretty red-haired gal living down the road."

Travis chuckled at the yearning expression on Corey's face. "I take it she's calling you back to New Mexico?"

"Not yet, but likely soon. She's got some kind of a bullfighter fantasy going on inside that head of hers, and she's decided I'm the fire she wants to play with."

Travis burst out laughing.

Corey grinned and cocked an eyebrow.

"No pretty women calling me back to my hometown." There was nothing calling to Travis except cattle and horses.

Though, for some reason, his thoughts moved back to Danielle. But she wasn't from his hometown, and she sure wasn't any young innocent. She was twenty-eight, only a year younger than Travis. She was a graduate of Harvard Law, a practicing lawyer and probably the smartest, most sophisticated woman he'd ever met. She also flat out refused to give him the time of day.

"Think of that as another reason to go on the road," Corey countered.

"I'm on the road right now," said Travis. There wasn't a reason in the world he couldn't be footloose for the next few days.

He'd earned it, and he had a check in his pocket just itching to get spent.

"That you are." Corey clapped him on the back. "Let's hit the clubs and show off that new buckle of yours. I bet there are dozens of gorgeous ladies out there just dying to hear how you rode the bull a full eight seconds, and how I saved your life in the arena."

"Is that how you're going to play it? That you saved my life?"

"Damn straight," said Corey.

There were two men in the world Danielle Marin wanted to avoid. Unfortunately, both of them had turned up in Vegas.

She was attending an international law conference, so she'd been on alert for Randal Kleinfeld. It seemed likely the wunderkind D.C. attorney would show up for a lecture by his university mentor Stan Sterling. But Travis Jacobs had come out of left field, literally.

She'd been blindsided when the announcer called his name at the bull riding show, then mesmerized when the bucking bull burst from the chute. Travis made it look effortless, as if he'd been born on the back of a Brahma. That he'd won should have come as no surprise to her. When it came to all things ranching and rough stock, Travis was a master. Stone-faced and rugged, tough and no-nonsense, he was the absolute antithesis of the smooth-talking, urbane Randal.

Show over, and back at the conference hotel with her friends, Danielle couldn't help but ponder the differences between the two men. Travis sticking in her mind, she took a bracing swallow of her vodka martini.

"That's the spirit, Dani," called Astra Lindy from across the table, raising her cosmo in a mock toast.

"I told you it would be fun," said Nadine Beckman as she accepted a frozen Bellini from their waitress.

The four women were less than a mile from the bull riding arena, relaxing in the lobby lounge. The temperature was mid-seventies, a light breeze blowing in from the hotel pool and the gardens.

"It was a blast," Odette Gray agreed with an enthusiastic nod. "Cowboys have the sexiest butts." She'd gone with a light beer.

The other two women laughed. Danielle smiled, keeping her expression lighthearted, even as she called up a mental image of Travis walking away. It simply wasn't fair. How could so much sexiness be wrapped up in such an exasperating man? And what kind of character flaw made her want him?

She took another healthy sip of her drink, regretting that she'd let her three friends talk her into the bull riding excursion. It had seemed like a harmless diversion after a full day of conference topics like Comparative Legal Systems and Cross Border Taxation. And it should have been a harmless diversion. Who could have predicted that Travis Jacobs would choose this week to leave Lyndon Valley and show up in Vegas?

"I'd do a cowboy," Nadine brazenly declared.

"In a heartbeat," Odette agreed.

"Up close, they're dusty and crude," Danielle pointed out, speaking to herself as much as to the other women. "They talk slow, use short sentences, very small words."

"Crude can be sexy," said Nadine. "And the dust washes off."

Sadly, deep down in her secret heart of hearts, Danielle agreed. She'd once seen Travis after he'd cleaned up. The result had made her gasp for breath, and put her libido into overdrive.

"Dani knows cowboys," said Astra. "She spends a lot of time in Colorado."

"I wouldn't call it a lot of time," Danielle corrected.

Truth was, she avoided Lyndon Valley as much as possible. The Jacobs spread was right next to the Terrell ranch. And Caleb Terrell was one of her major clients. He lived in Lyndon Valley only part-time, so she could usually arrange to put in her hours for Active Equipment at his Chicago head office or at her own law office on the Chicago River.

"Caleb's a cowboy," said Astra. "He doesn't use small words."

"I was generalizing," Danielle admitted.

On a night like tonight, she needed to take every opportunity to remind herself there was a world of difference between her and Travis Jacobs. She was closer to Randal in background, values, temperament and, of course, profession.

She'd dated Randal in law school, breaking up with him at graduation when he secured a prime internship in D.C. and she had accepted the offer in Chicago. He'd wanted to stay together, but she knew it wouldn't work out. Long-distance relationships never did. Plus, she hadn't been convinced he was the one. He was close, and she couldn't exactly say what was missing. But her instincts had told her to end it.

Randal had not been happy with the split. Not that he had anything to complain about the way things turned out. He was rising fast on the D.C. legal scene. The firm he worked for, Nester and Hedley, had clients that included senators, congressmen and captains of international industry. Danielle's Chicago job was bush-league by comparison.

Which made it strange that a partner from Nester and Hedley had contacted her last week, making her an offer that was all but impossible to refuse. She could only assume Randal had a hand in it, and she didn't know whether to thank him or berate him.

The job would give her a chance to build toward an equity partnership in a prestigious, cutting-edge firm. Any lawyer would jump at that. But she didn't want to be beholden to Randal. And she didn't want to date him again. Maybe she was being ridiculously conceited, but she couldn't help but wonder if that would turn out to be part of the package.

"Good evening, ladies," drawled a male voice.

She glanced up to see a vaguely familiar man in a black cowboy hat, a blue-and-green Western shirt and faded blue jeans. A split second later, she caught sight of Travis slightly behind him, worn Stetson low on his brow, face tanned brown, a challenging glint in his cobalt eyes.

She was honestly too tired for this.

"Are you from the rodeo?" asked Nadine, glancing from one to the other.

"We are," the stranger answered.

Astra pointed to Travis. "He's the guy who won, isn't he?"

"Are you a bull rider, too?" Nadine chirped to the other man.

"I'm a bullfighter."

"So, one of the clowns?" she asked.

"There's a big difference between a clown and a bullfighter, ma'am. For example." He jabbed this thumb toward Travis. "I saved this guy's life tonight."

"I saw that," Odette put in knowingly.

"Nice buckle." Nadine had turned her attention and her brilliant smile to Travis. She reached out and touched the shiny, gold and silver prize at his waist.

Danielle couldn't help but roll her eyes at the bling. Really? He had to wear it?

"This is Travis Jacobs," the stranger introduced, removing his hat. "He's tonight's bull riding champion. And I'm Corey Samson, bullfighter extraordinaire."

"Did he really save your life?" Odette asked Travis on a note of awe. Danielle knew the question was more about flirting than any true amazement at Corey's feat.

Corey looked to Travis and waited.

"He most certainly did," Travis acknowledged staunchly. "Bullfighters are highly skilled, highly trained, and among the bravest men on the planet."

The word wingman flitted through Danielle's brain. Travis was trying to help his friend pick up Odette.

Nadine turned to her. "That wasn't short sentences and small words."

Travis's challenging gaze turned on Danielle. It was clear he remembered her using that particular phrase in the past.

"It was a generalization," she repeated, refusing to break eye contact with him.

"That's very impressive," Odette told Corey with an almost comical flutter of her eyelashes.

"Danielle is continuously unequivocal in her elevated specifications for interactive discourse," said Travis, keeping his expression completely neutral.

"How does he know your name?" Astrid immediately demanded.

"We met in Colorado," said Travis.

"Briefly," Danielle pointed out.

"Dance?" Corey asked Odette.

"Love to." She giggled as she came to her feet.

"Dance?" Travis asked Danielle.

"Too busy with my drink," she responded airily, lifting her long-stemmed glass.

"I'll dance with you," Nadine chimed in with obvious enthusiasm, holding out a hand.

"Ma'am," Travis answered her, gallantly tipping his hat, taking her hand and helping her to her feet.

"You know a real live bull riding champion?" Astrid asked Danielle as the two couples left the covered deck for the dance floor inside, and Danielle concentrated on not looking at Tra-vis's rear end.

"He's not a champion." Danielle went ahead and finished off the martini. "He only does it as a hobby."

"He's pretty good."

"That's what happens when you spend your entire life on a ranch in Lyndon Valley."

Good book but...
By Christine
Good book in a good series, but lot of mistakes. Hard enough to keep things straight in a continuity, but when the books can't keep them straight it's even harder. Caleb was listed as a best friend, a brother, and a brother on law to the main character. He was also married to Mandy and Katrina was married to reed, but when Caleb went home Katrina was who lived with him. There were other examples, but these were the most confusing. Hard to keep from being distracted, but a good story if you can set these issues aside.

Does your Family Make You Smarter?: Nature, Nurture, and Human Autonomy, by James R. Flynn

Does your family make you smarter? James R. Flynn presents an exciting new method for estimating the effects of family on a range of cognitive abilities. Rather than using twin and adoption studies, he analyses IQ tables that have been hidden in manuals over the last 65 years, and shows that family environment can confer a significant advantage or disadvantage to your level of intelligence. Wading into the nature vs. nurture debate, Flynn banishes the pessimistic notion that by the age of seventeen, people's cognitive abilities are solely determined by their genes. He argues that intelligence is also influenced by human autonomy - genetics and family notwithstanding, we all have the capacity to choose to enhance our cognitive performance. He concludes by reconciling this new understanding of individual differences with his earlier research on intergenerational trends (the 'Flynn effect') culminating in a general theory of intelligence.

Review
"Another superb piece of work by the best mind in the business. The analysis of data is penetrating, the elaboration of its meaning highly illuminating, and the discourse on theories of intelligence is a feast for the mind."
Thomas J. Bouchard, Jr, Winner of the Dobzhansky Memorial Award for a Lifetime of Outstanding Scholarship in Behavior Genetics

"Another amazing analysis of IQ data by James Flynn! As author of the Stanford-Binet 5, I have admired Flynn's work for many years. I highly recommend his new book that shines new light on the life-course of intelligence."
Gale H. Roid, author of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, 5th edition

"James Flynn takes up one of the most important questions in the social sciences - what is left of human autonomy in the genomic age? - and lays out the optimistic case with full acknowledgment of the technical difficulties his argument must surmount. This is the way that we are going to make progress: by engaging an evolving state of knowledge with logic and data, transparently clear prose, and unfailing civility."
Charles Murray, co-author of The Bell Curve

"Few intellectuals have grappled honestly with the problems surrounding the causes and effects of intelligence, and fewer still have done so with as much incisiveness and originality as James Flynn."
Steven Pinker, Harvard University

"Professor Flynn has a remarkable ability to explain complex concepts in a way so rational and logical that it seems, after the event, we should be kicking ourselves for overlooking the obvious. His chapter on the Raven's Progressive Matrices is brilliant."
John Rust, Director of The Psychometrics Centre, University of Cambridge, and co-author of Raven's Progressive Matrices

"James Flynn, as much as anyone, can take credit for ushering in the age of enlightenment in our understanding of the nature of human intelligence. In this latest chapter, we learn how our families can either advantage or disadvantage us, and how our choices can either foster or impede our intellectual performance."
Joshua Aronson, New York University

About the Author
James R. Flynn is Professor Emeritus at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and a recipient of the University's Gold Medal for Distinguished Career Research. He is renowned for the 'Flynn effect', the documentation of massive IQ gains from one generation to another. Professor Flynn is the author of 12 books, including Are We Getting Smarter? (Cambridge, 2012), Where Have All the Liberals Gone? (Cambridge, 2008) and What Is Intelligence? (Cambridge, 2007), which caused many to rethink the prevailing theory of intelligence.

A Broad and Technical Survey of "Intelligence"
By bill greene
James Flynn has written a number of innovative books on the subject of IQ’s. In this book, Flynn never answers the question posed, since he argues that the family's environmental effect diminishes over time, although the parent's genetics remain? His most well know finding is that IQ scores for each successive generation in advanced nations have continued to rise over the last century. This rise in scores, however, represents a rise in abstract thinking over concrete thinking because schools and tests have been slanted to reward the former over the latter. Like most Ph.D’s, the author is a great advocate of abstract cognitive abilities, although he acknowledges, but downplays, the numerous other personal talents that actually determine success in the modern world

The book provides the reader with useful coverage of other theories on intelligence as advanced by almost a dozen writers, including Howard Gardner, who has argued that each individual has “multiple intelligences.” These writers point to people skills, musical talent, kinesthetic, spatial, and empathy as talents equal to IQ. Flynn acknowledges that these supportive traits are similar to Robert Sternberg’s “practical intelligence,” and could be expanded to include Albert Bandura’s emphasis on motivation, self-control, and a sense of self-efficacy.” However, he never elevates them to the level he holds for IQ scores. (Note that in the real world, recruiters looking to fill job openings, look for Bandura’s talents: ambition, curiosity, grit, humility, hustle, and resourcefulness)

For those readers interested in a less academic approach, and more emphasis on the non IQ traits that Flynn basically ignores, read Thomas J. Stanley’s two books on self-made millionaires. His findings are that most of their success was founded on five personal characteristics: Integrity, self-discipline, getting along with people, a supportive spouse, and hard work. Most were average students in school. A number of scholars have shown that such things as emotional restraint and persistence are partly inherited and more important than grades or IQ in predicting success. Flynn hesitates on that, concluding that: “we must wait for direct genetic evidence: identification of the combination of genes that affect various kinds of cognition,” until we know that certain combinations lead to either superior or inferior performance. He thus remains politically correct—that the people of all groups are on average of equal cognitive ability—but differing environments and sub-cultures cause their IQ differences.

Flynn does concede that although the genes we are born with determine much of our cognitive ability, everyone has the opportunity, using their “autonomy,” to elevate their IQ scores by 10 percent: “children at school who try harder than most can upgrade their cognitive environment and reap important benefits.” The author doesn’t connect the dots, but what he is saying is that Bandura’s talents are essentially a part of one’s IQ because the possession of grit, curiosity, and hustle, (or the lack of those talents) can create a 20% swing up or down in one’s score.

The book has many fascinating nuggets that help a reader understand the complexity and wide range of human abilities. Flynn asserts that your genes determine the neural framework of your brain and its capacity to solve complex cognitive problems; the average intelligence of the human race has evolved by natural selection and will continue to do so; each succeeding generation differs little in genetic quality except for occasional changes caused by selective migration, mate selection, hybrid vigor, and catastrophes; but over many generations those with challenging cultures will gain in cognitive abilities; there are group differences in IQ caused by differing cultures and sub-cultures where both genes and environment impact their residents’ ability; today’s black American subculture has a poor cognitive quality that costs children 10-15 IQ points by the age of 8-9 years of age; nations that have gone from pre-modern cultures to full modern cultures will show an IQ gain of at least 36 points; and that that differential reflects the cumulative gains of generations of people who evolved through the Industrial Revolution compared to those who have not.

Flynn does indicate in two paragraphs early in the book that while family effects on intelligence diminish over time, the family’s role may be vital by avoiding mishaps during childhood that would impair a child’s future: Avoiding drugs, finishing high school, avoiding pregnancy, staying out of teen age gangs, and stealing, are all vices “that mean you will start your adult life not only with obvious strikes against you but also with attitudes, and emotions, and traits that color your whole life. . .Intelligence is not everything.” It is refreshing that this common wisdom is interjected but it would be better if more attention had been devoted to that important role of family and that instilling certain attitudes and moral behavior is arguably more important than a big vocabulary.

don't use the twin effect to counter the Flynn effect
By William S Jamison
The scope of this inquiry is less than the overall success of individuals but aimed at a narrower focus limited to measurable IQ scores - which can of course affect success but except for pointing out intelligence isn't everything, does not attempt to explore everything else. (For an interesting explanation of the solution to this paradox see his book What is Intelligence? page 18.) The target of the book is the message of the twin literature which may be misleading and can result in a pessimistic outlook on the part of those who would like to advance beyond the limits of their given family life and circumstances. To this the good news is you can go beyond that and at least reach the level your genes "intended" provided you use your own autonomy to do the things that will increase your IQ. These include things like not only joining a library club but more especially loving to read. The significance of family influence whether positive or negative can be detrimental in your SAT scores, for example, which can limit what kind of university you enter and what profession you achieve. What families influence most is vocabulary. After 17 the influence of the family drops off and you can level off at the range permitted by your genes. So the answer is that your family can make you smarter but only up to a certain point at which time you are free for good or bad to better yourself or not. So don't use the twin effect to counter the Flynn effect.

From Library Journal
Toronto-based comedian Sankey may not be a household name, but his how-to book is a worthy complement to Judy Carter's Stand-Up Comedy: The Book (Dell, 1989) and far better than Richard Belzer's slight How To Be a Stand-Up Comic (Citadel, 1992). While Carter offers more specific advice on joke writing to beginners, Sankey provides more depth, musing helpfully on writing, delivery, set structure, and more. He may be right to advise that naturally funny people can learn to do stand-up, but Sankey could say more about the daunting hurdles to latter-day professional success. His Zen references are judiciously sparse, and his conclusion that stand-up comics can learn from Zen about being "in the moment" and staying loose on stage rings true. For strong performing arts collections.?Norman Oder, "Library Journal"

The Best Book on Stand-up
By paul cross
I've read a lot of bad books on stand-up comedy, all of them except this one. This is the only good one I've read. After I read this, I did stand-up for the first time at a bar for 30 people. The next week I was in the Comedy Central/Miller Lite Lite 'n Up competition at Comedy Works in Denver for a packed house each time I performed. Out of 100 people, and over the course of 2 months of performing, I got third place. Since then I've moved to Chicago and got booked at Zanie's. A lot of that had to do with the book. It cuts through to the chase.

Brilliant - like no other comedy writing book out there!
By Dan Seidman
I collect humorous stories - sales blunders, actually. So I wanted a book that would help me as a professional speaker to be as funny as possible. Speakers, like comedians, get paid more when their audience laughs more.
So I began buying all the comedy writing books and most are pretty good. Buy Jay's is first of all, hilariously funny (bonus!) and second, more insightful than anything else. He discusses the psychology of the performer and the audience. He has little, interesting, no - fascinating details I found nowhere else.
Funny cartoons, creativity galore, inspiration and encouragement for anyone dipping into comedy or getting a dunking in it.
Best book on the block on this topic!

a workbook
By jqln
If you are curious about what makes things funny and how to get laughs, this book breaks it down. It is geared towards people breaking into the world of stand-up comedy, and even if you don't intend on making a career out of it, you can still learn a lot about being funny. If you want to be a stand-up comedian, this book is for you. If you are inclined to write, I suggest picking up a copy of The Comic Toolbox by Vorhaus.

not what I needed-get the new version instead
By K. Bent
If you need this book for your class you would fair off well with this version only if your professor doesn't assign any actual work from the book. This book is only good for background info for your prelab preparation. I found out this drawback just last week had to borrow the new version from someone anyway. There are major differences between the old and new versions such as the new version has an entire chapter on uv spectroscopy with hw questions at the end whereas the old version on has a section on the subject with no hw questions at all! Screwed me up! Don't buy it if you really need to use it to study for your class! Glad I only paid $10 dollars total including shipping.
