Exactly what you need to teach a Bible class.

The maps are an excellent resource and the tripod is very handy for transporting and displaying the maps. I only wish the company would produce a set of clear transparent overlays of the shape of the world today, especially in the Middle East with all the changes in boundaries and borders. Other than that, a terrific resource for teaching my Bible classes.

The maps were good! Only complaint was that they could have perhaps been a bit larger. The tripod was actually sturdier than I thought it would be as well. My husband is the Christian Education director at our church, and the reports from the Sunday School teachers who have used these have been good. The maps seem well laminated and they should hold up just fine.

These maps are a big help in any Bible study class. Although they may not show every possible feature in a particular region, they are extremely helpful in giving students a better understanding of Biblical history. The tripod can be raised or lowered, and the maps can be rotated to face any direction too. Very helpful, and well made too.

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.

Standard International Relations Textbook on How Wars Begin

There is a lot of muddle about why wars start... with the average bloke on the street and (sadly) the average soldier, saying that "it is all inevitable" or "part of human nature."

In Howard's book this is clearly not the case... he explores a number of classical reasons for the causes of war, from the classical liberal interpretation (wars are caused by misunderstandings) to that of realists (power politics and need for balance of power), in between there is adequate consideration and historical detail of other reasoned explanations for war, including consideration of the Marxist analysis of the causes of war (perhaps now thoroughly irrelevant), and the fascist notion of might=right.

Howard's style is academic but never boring and he accepts nothing at face value, or as being inevitable. In one of the better quotes from this book he states that "nothing is inevitable until it happens" -- I think that is the lesson of this book. We make the decisions that either lead or avoid war. Sometimes the causes are not directly attributable to a single source. We control our own destiny.

Having said that I think that Howard is really a liberal synthesis sort of academic. He is really into the importance of interpreting and sending clear messages (something that Nixon and Kissinger and even Clinton were good at). He cautions against the temptations of ideology and has the classic liberal notion that nation states only achieve their freedoms when they fight for it themselves. No nation can ever be given freedom. Therefore he would not be in favour of the kind of ideologically driven foreign policy of the current Bush adminstration.

Like most traditional liberals and conservatives he would be against the rather bombastic ideological leadership which is losing American yet another war and speeding its global decline.

Poetic, literate, and artistic! Transcens the traditional limitations of its genre!

Some rare artistic works effortlessly transcend the traditional limitations of both their genre and their medium. CandyAppleBlack is one of these. Be forewarned, this is not a comic book series for young children. Poetic, literate, and rife with a broken and maimed humanity, Candy's protag, an exiled angel named Cayce, gives new meaning to the term "anti-hero." In C.A.B., the books' creator, Regent St. Claire (of 80s/90s NWOBHM glamsters Castle Blak), has created a new sub-genre here which he calls "Seraph Noir," or, The Dark Angels. Are there subtle hints of Preacher, Sandman, and The Crow peppered throughout Candy? Most definitely. In the most loving, subtle, and reverential ways. Djezer's somewhat softer pencils are balanced by cover artist Marc Sasso's unique and evocative photosurrealistic covers, and Eric Theriault's VERY Noir-esque b&w inks. Candy is a potent combination that very painfully (and soooo arcanely) tells the tales of not only the rogue angel, but the many vulnerable humans who cross his path on their way to sliding from this mortal coil. In the words of the ethereal Cayce: "It lets them embrace the darkness inside them, and turns their blood candyappleblack, just... like... mine." I long for the day when Candy will finally reach the live-action silver screen, where the non-comics world can also come to know what happens when the power of many... becomes the power of one.

Gothically dark and delicious!

I was twiddling my thumbs one night after a rather desperate evening spent on my backside watching seasons 1-2 of X files when a friend came over raving about a book he had downloaded to his kindle. Informing me that i would immediately recognise the author I took a glance on the web to see what he was fussing about. i couldn't believe it. When I was 16 I was a pretty avid rock fan and one of my favourite acts was a band called Castle Blak for whom Regent was the frontman! I wasted no time and jumped straight into his book 'Fire and Rain'.
Typically of Regent, his book manages to weave together a story so removed from real life that you almost feel like you are part of the unbelievable tale that unfolds before your eyes. Gothically dark, delicious yet full of angelic optimism and with a hero like no other there is only one way to read this book...all in one session!!

So happy to see these awesome books finally available in electronic form. I bought the original print copies when they first came out, and when I finally figure out how to obtain them electronically, I will obtain the electronic versions for ease of portability.

The CandyAppleBlack storyline is wonderful, dark, compelling, gothic, "saints and sinners" material and makse you think "what if?" - what if angels *ARE* around us, blending in with we mere mortals, working through their own sorrows and trials and tribulations the same as we are, but maybe on a grander scale than us?

I have read and re-read the books many times over the years and they stand up to repeated readings. I highly reccomend all the books in the CandyAppleBlack series - go get 'em, you won't be dissapointed!

Although I have been reading in the Consciousness & Social IQ arena, where I have 300 books so-tagged, and I end this review with five other books that I recommend in addition to this one, I found this book to be a very uplifting and practical book, one I could draw from for immediate action.

It's one of the best combinations I have read where first person experience, scientific findings and technology (for example EEG or electroencephalogram), and spiritual insights and practices have been brought together. It is also unusual for integrating direct references to many of the respected and even revered great souls and hearts and minds that the author has interviewed over time.

I do want to list just a very few of the many names that are integrated into this book to the point that it could be viewed as a quick once over of the best of the best integrated practices for whole body-mind-heart-soul health. They include EEG "top guns" Dr. Barry Sterman and Dr. Siegfried Othmer with Dr. Susan Othmer and below just five of her published integrated sources:

In short, for those familiar with this genre of books, I recommend Becoming Aware as a lovely capstone endeavor sure to satisfy, and for those new to the genre, this is a wonderful starting point for entry into what is becoming one of the most important literatures of our time.

I have many notes throughout the book and will not spoil the discovery process by putting them all here. The bottom line: this book articulates, in a most uplifting manner, how YOU are in charge of your mind, your heart, your feelings, your body, and your life. With this book in hand, all of those can be uplifted.

Apply the psychology of Becoming Aware for Your Personal Success

The reason I recommend this book is because Becoming Aware is an authentic story of how one person can make a difference and then shares with you as the reader how to do this for yourself. It is a heartfelt “how to” path of the realistic steps and lessons you can apply in your own life without “changing” who you are at the core. Lisa Garr defines how to repattern your own brain for a maximum awareness of life and personal success. To her it is clear we all have the opportunity to participate in conscious conversations and the choice of “Becoming Aware”.

A year a nearly fatal mountain biking racing accident, Lisa Garr went back, competed and amazingly WON the California State Mountain Biking Championship on the same mountain (page 44). What makes this story so applicable to the reader is the book takes you on a clear path of how to make your life better and more aware in key areas by actively engaging developing your own understanding of psychology, neuro linguistics and spirituality.

The book showcases the psychological, emotional, spiritual and physical journey the author had to endure re-learning how to do many tasks we all take for granted like being able to speak. With her brain injury Lisa literally had to repattern (today it is often referred to as neuroplasticity) her brain to learn to complete sentences and have meaningful conversations with people. The book invokes clear images of how we all can learn to have more conscious conversations if we become aware. She had to learn to reconnect her brain synapses to accomplish neuro linguistically what most of us take for granted everyday however; her message is this process actually led her to understand how this experience consciously woke her up to become aware. From this tragedy she she embarked on a journey to become a top radio, Internet and tv talk show host. The book covers the main topic areas such as: Manifesting What You Want, Unlocking Your True Potential, Understanding How to Use Stress Effectively, Overcoming Life’s Roadblocks, Experiencing Death and Loss, Embracing Your Own Body, Learning to and How to Keep Your Inner Child Alive. The author is an expert in these areas after conducting more than 4000 interviews on applied psychology, success, self esteem, personal transformation, neuroscience and more with over 1500 guest speakers.

The book, Becoming Aware is written thoughtfully and from the heart.

Already one of my Top 5 favorite books

This book is really two stories. The first story is how Lisa broke her brain and healed it, and the second story is how we can use those techniques in our own life, to raise our own level of consciousness.

It's really engaging storytelling, too. As someone who is physically active and quick-witted, I could not imagine going through what Lisa went through, losing control of her speech and mental faculties.

Seeing how she pieced her brain back together was fascinating. I love how she refused to be defeated, and built a stronger mind with greater habits - that's intentional living.

I've already started incorporating some of these exercises and perspectives in my own life, and I have definitely noticed my own awareness and consciousness increasing. Now my decisions are more intentional, less hurried, and less stressed.

I've read dozens of books by Hay House authors, and this one is definitely in my top 5.

DAVID CROSSWHITE is an advisor to senior leadership of large organizations on their most significant strategy and growth challenges. For over twenty years he has guided Global 1000 organizations in their implementation of growth and innovation strategies. Here's a "comprehensive, practical how-to guide to address the most pressing innovation challenges in your organization"

Why did Peter Skarzynski and David Crosswhite write this field guide? Briefly, to help leaders in just about any organization "who seek step-change improvement in their organization's, team's, or individual innovation initiatives." With regard to those initiatives, they reveal themselves to be world-class empiricists, determined to understand what, works, what doesn't, and why, then share what they have learned with as many business leaders as possible. My reference to "business leaders" includes [begin italics] anyone [end italics] who can provide effective leadership at any level and in any area throughout the given enterprise.

Here are the nine Principles of Innovation (i.e. "why you are doing what you're doing") that Skarzynski and Crosswhite introduce and discuss in detail:

1. Articulate a clear definition of innovation
2. Aim your efforts at the business concept, and focus not just on the "what" but also "who" and "why"
3. Understand that innovation means new learning
4. Earn the right to ideate through insight-driven innovation
5. Focus on strategic innovation to avoid one-off efforts
6. Make the work of innovation not merely the generating of new ideas but an end-to-end process through to successful commercialization
7. Build innovation capability through a learn-by-doing approach
8. Be systematic and systemic in your approach
9. Embrace and employ open innovation.

Readers will appreciate Skarzynski and Crosswhite's provision, at the beginning of Chapters 2-10, a set of key Qs they will address in the material to follow and then a set of "Key Take-Aways" at the chapter's conclusion. Throughout their lively and eloquent narrative, they explain HOW TO:

o Increase your innovation IQ through insight-driven experimentation
o Enable breakthrough innovation
0 Develop a nascent idea to a business concept
o Expedite fast innovation
o Derive maximum advantage from experimentation and risk-taking

I agree with Skarzynski and Crosswhite that innovation is difficult "because organizations are structured and managed to execute their current model, and innovation -- focuses on creating the new one. You seek to create new concepts for the core business, for adjacencies, and for outside the core. There are healthy tensions between a focus on the new and the critically important need to manage and execute today's business. Each is important, and each requires continuous learning."

They alert their reader to six "common pitfalls" and explain why each is erroneous, indeed self-defeating." Here they are, each discussed in depth (Pages 251-252):

Misconception #1: Innovation is about tools and process only.
Reality: It's about new learning. "Tools and process are simply codified and organized scaffolding to help you to get that learning."

#2: Innovation is about technology only.
Reality: It's about the job (e.g. answer a question, solve a problem) the customer hires the technology to do. "

#3: Innovation is about ideas or creativity only.
Reality: "If innovation equals a new idea successfully commercialized, then there is a lot more to innovation than just ideation or creativity." Taking a limited view of what is possible severely limits chances for high-impact innovation.

#4: Commercialization is about execution, not innovation."
Reality: The "we got it" view tends to ignore many other elements of the business model such as pricing, channel, and market support. "You must think through and challenge all elements of the business concept...and thereby widen the innovation aperture."

#5: Innovation can be delegated down.
Reality: Senior-level management must be "actively engaged in creating the points of view on both content (innovations0 and process (capability). When they do that, the process gains traction" and sustains it.

#6: The work of innovation stops at launch.
Reality: The most innovative companies "make proactive efforts and deploy mechanisms to perpetuate postlaunch learning and iteration to capture 'upside' on opportunities already in market."

As indicated, Peter Skarzynski and David Crosswhite discuss all this in great detail. I commend them on the abundance of information, insights, and counsel that are provided in this field guide. This material can help leaders in almost any organization -- whatever its size and nature may be -- to meet its innovation challenges. Bravo!

A Great Innovation Reference Resource!

Sometimes I pick up a book on innovation (or any business book topic) and discover that the author(s) of the book really should have just written a long article. I had the OPPOSITE reaction to "The Innovator's Field Guide" - it seemed as though the authors were trying hard to be as concise as possible while imparting a wealth of insight gained via "real world" experience working with organizations struggling to create innovation friendly environments.

The area that - for me - was well worth the price of the book (and the time invested reading it) was the author's perspectives on "seed funding" for innovation. For many organizations the process of funding experimentation and rapid lean startup style pivots is not second nature. The authors share what I found to be a number of valuable insights into different ways to handle this internal venture funding process.

Also, unlike 99% of the business books in my library, this is one that I'll find myself going back to as a reference resource.

The secret sauce of innovation! From beggining to end or as reference guide, an essential tool for future and current innovators

Innovation is a hot business topic, everybody talks about and recognizes its importance but executing it is a mystery for many. The Innovator’s Field Guide is an opportunity for current and aspiring innovation practitioners to learn the tactical elements of innovation from some of the most experienced and successful people in the field.

The book doesn’t only tell stories of great business innovators and their innovations but also provides access to some of the tools that enabled these people to achieve their success. I’ve experienced how proper application of these tools enables organizations and individuals to be innovative. At Whirlpool Corporation we’ve used many of these and some of the outcomes of our work with these tools are presented in their book. While The Innovator’s Field Guide is a book one must read from beginning to end it is also a great reference to be used to address specific aspects on a project-by-project basis.

The book is written in the highly professional, yet approachable and human manner that characterizes Peter and David – they’ll make you feel YOU can be an innovator. I wish this book had been written before!
