At first Damon isn't sure what to make of "This rugged dude/ Who some folk think/ Looks fierce in clothes/ of midnight black." But the boy quickly discovers Blue's "harmless, gentle-giant side." In between shooting hoops and outings to the park, Blue fortifies Damon's values and self-confidenceAthe very things that prevent Damon from resorting to the violence and antisocial behavior prevalent in his urban world. Though each of these accomplished poems could easily stand alone, together they form an enticing story arc. In his picture book debut, Lagarrigue doesn't interpret Grimes's words literallyAhis Blue looks approachable. Readers never see, for example, the teeth that startle the boy ("one gold, three cracked"), and Blue's getup doesn't match the text's description of perpetual shades and black leather. The deep-hued acrylic paintings have a rough, slightly smudgy texture, and they demonstrate a remarkable color sense. Unexpected fields of sharp blues and greens blend into the gritty cityscapes, and blocks of text are set against canvases thinly brushed with paint in palettes that complement the facing illustration. Grade 2-5-A child's suspicion of the new man in his mother's life grows into admiration and love in this set of linked poems. "When We First Met," young Damon recalls, "I circle, look him up and down and let/Him know his grin's not winning points with me," but all resistance melts in the face of Blue's respect, his quiet strength, his willingness to teach and to listen, and to look out for Damon's safety. By the end, Damon is hoping, one day, to be "Like Blue"; "Not fierce/In black leather/Or built like/A heavyweight/Boxing machine/But like that/Other Blue I've seen/The one who/Says he cares/And shows it." Lagarrigue debuts with a set of twilit, impressionistic, sparsely populated street scenes in which Blue, with his shaven head and heavy frame, leans hugely but attentively toward his diminutive companion. Damon mentions his mother several times, but because she appears in the illustrations only once, she remains a background presence as man and boy bond.

This against-the-odds book from Grimes (Jazmin's Notebook, 1998, etc.) tells of an African-American boy living in a neighborhood that cuts him no slack, and the man who helps keep his feet grounded and his self-esteem steady against the occasional buffeting of his peers. Damon and his mother have just moved to a new apartment when an old friend of the mother's introduces himself: Blue, a rather steely character wrapped in shades and enigma. Damon (who has just lost his father) is wary of Blue; he gives the man a chance only when it becomes evident that Blue is not about to move in on Damon's home turf. Blue (who ``had'' a son, now lost to the streets or worse) offers advice of haiku-like simplicity, teaching Damon to be his own man: anger is a dangerous waste, fear useless unless subverted, men don't hit women. Grimes gets across more subtle life lessons as well in both rhymed and unrhymed verse, on the dignity of work, and the sheer physical pleasure of sport when competition isn't the sole motivating factor. It is a story of a boy who is old for his age, but not callousand perhaps saved from callousness by Blue. Lagarrigue's illustrations are brooding gardens of color that hold the forces of disorder and menace at bay, while Damon's cool earnestnessas well as his courage and independencebrighten each page. The author holds that many chronic conditions, ranging from fatigue to food cravings, reflect the presence of systemic candidiasis (an invasive yeast infection), whose true occurrence he believes is se-verely underdiagnosed by conventional medical practitioners. His LifeForce Plan is a one-time detoxification tool with six key components: diet (no pork, sugar, dairy, alcohol, or grains except brown rice), water, 15 SF722 anti-Candida capsules daily, vitamin C, sweating sessions, and, after six weeks, acidophilus capsules. Because the SF722 capsules contain undecenoic acid, a derivative of the castor bean, it has not been approved for pregnant women in the first trimester. Caveat aside, the book is acceptable for larger alternative health collections.

Good advice, but hard to swallow.

Well, I guess anything worth doing is not easy. This book will give you the tools necessary to rid your body of candida yeast which is the root of a lot of disease we experience in the body according to many health professionals (although not recognized by most drug-pushing physicians these days). It's a good read and full of useful, healthful information. But, to do the candida cleasnse it mentions in the book you have to go to Dr. Jeff's website [...] and purchase his supplements to take along with the diet. The program can take 8 - 12 weeks as well with a sensible and logical diet plan included (you have to stop feeding the yeast to kill it). The only downside to this whole plan is the cost of the supplements which are about $576 for the whole 12 weeks or so (go to the website for details). Otherwise, it's a good read and may be worth your time (and money)to do this cleanse, especially if it saves you a few thousand dollars in medical bills down the road (an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!).

If everyone read this book the Pharmaceutical companies would be hurting financialy. I can't say enough good about this book. It has changed my way of eating. Not only have I lost weight, but I feel like I'm in my thirties. I have more energy and stamina than I have had in years.

Light reading, good plan

I started this program in order to rid myself of bad complexion slow bowels and stubborn weight. One out of three isn't great but they are a big three in my life so it's not all that bad either. I lost 30 pounds across 17 weeks. This includes the time it took me having added the bacteria a week late and the add back portion of the plan where various foods are reintroduced. Keep in mind that this is a one time plan and also that the book is very short. It's a brief overview of the plan and Doctor McCombs' general perspective on modern health. Good information, good insights. I've heard so many different testimonials that I honestly believe but in my personal case it could not clear my complexion or my irregularity. That's not necessarily going to be true of anyone else but I'm still glad I did it for the weight loss and new insights into the weight issue and living healthy. One of the worst health problems I've had was cleared up by one key idea. I talked with Doctor McCombs via email about it and he openly said he doesn't heed his own advice on the subject much of the time but if it weren't for him mentioning it and a company that specializes in it, I'd still have insomnia. I have had insomnia my whole life and now it's gone. It was gone immediately after I took the advice and it wasn't even recommended for insomnia! It wasn't the lifeforce plan but it was on his list of advice. I respect Dr. McCombs for his common sense and theories.

Update: I just want to quickly update my original review...about year ago I think. Although my chronic constipation was at its worst during the plan, even considering that I was partly doing it to remedy that problem, I've noticed that since completing his program and before starting anything else, it's not been a problem once. I suppose I spoke too soon. It seems to have cleared up the problem after all.

4/5 stars from The Reader's Favorite book reviews -- "I really enjoyed Adrian as a character. I found him a strong and charming bad boy. There were moments where I wanted to reach into the pages and smack him for some of his actions, but that is the mark of a perfectly created character. Sarah is no wilting violet when it comes to heroines. Sandra Sookoo has created a strong and independent heroine who never expected to find herself in the position she is in. However, once in it she does not give up or give in to her circumstances or love very easily. I would recommend this book to readers who love an adventure and to romance lovers who enjoy a strong female heroine to match up against a sultry bad boy hero."

Pirates have always held a spot in my heart since as along as a I could remember. I love researching the history of the real pirates from the past, love wandering over their ships in my mind and adore wondering what their lives--and loves--were really like. Writing about them is one of the most entertaining things for me. I hope you'll enjoy my pirate Adrian in this book. He's rather... wicked.

The pirate captain laughed and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Good luck with that. Many people want me dead, many of them more powerful than you. None have succeeded."

"Yes, and on a side note, the man who killed your loved ones did die--by my hand actually. So, really, I would say, you owe me an apology as well as your fidelity."

She bounced from relief that the perpetrator was dead to anger that she'd been cheated of avenging her father and fianc� herself to denial that the man she currently conversed with wasn't quite innocent in this crime. She hadn't expected this turn of events. In the end, she settled for anger. It was familiar and quick to respond. "How convenient. Let me out. Now."

She refused to allow him to treat her as her father and her fianc� had done. Never again would she allow a man to order her about or expect her immediate obedience. It was worse than the people who treated her like an infant, and she'd had enough of those to last a lifetime.

"Leaving so soon, kitten?"

She ignored the tremors running through her body at his endearment. Perhaps in difference circumstances she could be persuaded to stay. "I would rather die than thank you."

"Oh, you will thank me eventually, and no, I won't set you free." His smile died and in its place fell a mask of ice. "From this point forward, you belong to me, a prize of sorts for escaping the noose once again."

"No." Cold fear blanketed the hot anger. Succumbing to the pirate would mean the loss of the tiny amount of freedom she'd gained when her father died. She'd already fought too hard for personal independence to lose it to a man with no morals.

"In fact, you can blame your circumstances on your own actions. Had you not interfered with today's events, you would most likely not have garnered the attention of my men. Plus, your side show detracted attention from my escape from the gallows. So thank you for that. Such an action will go a long way into gaining acceptance on my crew."

"I--" Her heartbeat raced as if trying to escape her chest. "I didn't want their attention, or yours."

"That may be so, but you received it just as well. And you've killed, the same as I. It would seem you and I are well-matched and possess the same sort of black hearts." With efficient movements, he hauled her into his lap. "Welcome to your new life, my dear Miss Covington. I do hope you'll find it a pleasant endeavor."

"Nothing about you is pleasant." Yet curiosity blazed strong within her. In a way being tied to a pirate would be a means to an escape--if she could survive. Sarah whimpered as he tangled a hand in her hair. But at what cost would freedom be won?

He forced her head forward.

"Please do not--"

A hard, punishing kiss drowned the rest of her plea.

Fabulous Read

Erotic Regency with Pirates, yeah, this one had me at hello. I fell for Sandra's character's quickly. Sarah, the heroine, is described by Adrian, the "privateer" :), as trouble. Yes, lots to love here. As for Adrian, he's completely charming and strong and everything the bad boy should be. From the beginning I felt that Sarah would dive head first into anything that got thrown her way and boy did she ever. It was fun to watch her experience life, in a whole new way. These two push each other and challenge each other and it made for a page turning read. There's some fabulous suspense in here too, as expected on a Pirate ship. Sarah and Adrian certainly keep you on your toes and the ending is fully satisfying. This was my first Sandra Sookoo read, but it wont be my last. Loved it, a must read.

the only good parts were the sex scenes

This book was ok...my problem with this book Was it was so contradicting....she was so worried about living her life to do the right thing ( religious )..always talking about what God would do, redemption so on ...yet she killed a priest ,then sleeps with the pirate, then nags him for killing innocent people, but yet she killed 2 more herself...this book was lacking for me..the only good parts were the sex scenes ...like in the end she agrees to become a pirate and stay with him on his ship after there talk about her staying and there plans aboard, capturing other ships crew members and so on.the sea is his life and he will give it up for no one .. then boom they are moving to a virgina plantation...the end..I was like what the hell just happened...this book had potential but like I said if you like books that so contradicting , you will love this. It felt like ground hog day... same thing over and over..god this god that..granted this is no means a Christian book ... but this girl was a hypocrite... also to mention he is a dictator ...what he says goes..she fights but always gives in...he told her after he kidnapped her an says that you have 3 options..sleep with me till I'm threw with you, I give you to my crew or I throw you over board to the sharks..my word is law....hmm then he whips her with the (pussy ) a smaller belt..then gives her virginity willingly... really.. I would have taken option 3..shark bait.... just from his attitude through out book and her talk continually about god, it was repetitive... this book had so many flaws.. would not recommend . More like 2 stars..it won't let me take a star away.

Best step forward into the RE world!

As a newbie...I think this is my best step forward. I haven't finished the book completely. Am kinda like more than half way through it, but am so impressed that I felt the need to let you folks know what an amazing investment this has been. This book guides me to things that will help me understand and be prepared for the first few days/months and years while being established in the RE world. I don't want to give away the key points...but all I will say is that this is a MUST READ for newbie and aspiring RE agents. This is kind of like a training and one to one coaching session in itself. Thakyou for this Frank. A pleasant co-incidence is that even my RE pre-licensing course's instructors name was frank...and I am so glad I chose him over the rest of the schools.

Very Informative

I like this book because it answers questions that aren't normally included in your training and educational classes when you first enter the Affiliate Broker world! It was very concise, humorous and helpful. It helps you deal with the relatives who want you to waive your commission, the clients who want to haggle with you on your commission, what to expect as a newbie, some of the "darker" (a.k.a. "not so fun") aspects to expect and so much more. I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to the business.

The cellphone on the cover should have been a give away. Though only 12 years old, most of the content is as pertinent to today's real estate arena as a VHS player is to todays entertainment market. The book was published before social media, the recession, etc., etc..

If your instructor tells you to buy this book then you know why your instructor is teaching real estate and not practicing it.

At first, I'm from Brazil so my english may not be that good Ok!
The book is very complete and tells the history of Leo Fender and his associates growing up the factory till the acomplish of the Stratocaster and goes on throug the whole history, pointing some of the great players.
The pictures are amazing as well as the quality of the printing.
I have imported from Amazon to Brazil and I'm satisfied.

I was first introduced to the Fender Stratocaster in 1967 when i listened to the vinyl of a new recording artist by the name of Jimi Hendrix. The first song on the LP;Purple Haze........I had been playing electric guitar for just over a year and not only was I being introduced to one of the most superior artists and legends of Rock, but was captivated by the unique body style of his instrument of choice, the Fender Stratocaster. Five years later I'm playing in the band with my brand new Olympic White Fender Strat with a shining Maple neck and I never looked back. This book by Tony Bacon recaptures the complete history of that "Ultimate Axe," and it's creator, the reverend Leo Fender; along with the effect that particular guitar has had on the music industry. Anyone that is familiar with Tony Bacon already knows he is at the top of his game telling the stories of many famous guitars such as Fender's Telecaster and Gibson's Les Paul. He shares with us all the vital improvements, the ongoing expansion of an art form, and the business and musical decisions that were involved in the evolution of this classic instrument. I have read many books on the creation of my favorite musical weapon of choice but none as complete, as well illustrated and documented as this book. If you want to know the history of this great guitar....THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK YOU NEED!

First four years after Hicrat

This Volume covers the first four years after the Hicrat. Among various excurcios to neighbouring tribes or caravans the volume covers Badr and Uhud battles. Marriage of Mohammed (AS) to HZ. Aisah, conflicts with Jews in the city of Madina. Tabari uses Ibn Ishak, Ibn Hisham as his sources and time to time provides variant stories on same subject with chain of isnads. Contrary to his Tafsir, he does not say which one is more acceptable to him. The translators have some preface and time to time expalanatory commentary in Fine Prints which I found most of them unacceptable. I did not appreciate sometimes their twisted opinions in a book which is supposed to be a translation. But again I appreciate their work for making this book available to English readers.

Magnificent Opus by an Early Islamic Historian

Tabari's opus is magnificent indeed. His Taarikh (History of Prophets and Kings) is a great peace of early islamic historiography, earliest with the exception of Ibn Ishaq's Sira. SUNY did great job translating this 40-volume into English. The reder will find out how early Islam developed according to its official narrative, and how it conquered neighboring lands. I would suggest to the reader to also check historiographical works on early Islam by Hoyland, Crone, Cook, Ibn Warraq and particularly by B. Lewis and M. Sharon, which provide more context for Tabari's History and discuss historicity - or lack thereof - of its narrative.

Anything that Clinton Anderson puts his name on is worth picking up!

I have many books and videos on horse training and techniques and by far and away Clinton Anderson always has something worth reading. In very clear and concise language he explains what you need to do in order to help a horse overcome a variety of issues which ultimately comes down to the horse being either spooky or disrespectful or both! His material covers a lot and helps everyone from the advanced trainer, the average backyard horseperson or the novice to be safer and more knowledgeable around horses. That translates to a much better union and relationship with your horse, which is the goal of most people who love their horses. We've all been there before..."Where wisdom ends frustration begins"! Ground Manners for Horses

Well illustrated. Very helpful. I use Clinton Anderson and Marty Roberts methods with my horses and am making quick progress with basic training. It all boils down to non-violence and spending a lot of time with your horses. No quick fix just proper ground training.
