About the Author
Andy Zeffer is Features Editor of The Express News in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His work has appeared in the Provincetown Banner, the New York Blade, the Washington Blade, Southern Voice and US Weekly. In a previous life, he was an actor, appearing in Woody Allen's Celebrity and the hit independent film, The Fluffer.

Entertaining read about a NY transplant looking to "make it" in Los Angeles

Andy Zeller is a gay waiter/would-be actor in his early 20's, who decides to leave New York City to "start over" in Los Angeles, hoping to put his Screen Actor Guild card to good use. He moves in with his best friend and former New School classmate Candy, a straight slacker who could use some "starting over" herself, and finds out that the odds against getting a job as an actor - or even finding a decent temp job somewhere - are even worse, since he is far from the only good-looking guy who had the idea to move there. He gets a job as a production assistant at a gay porn studio, and eventually decides to take up his bosses on their offer to appear in one of their videos. From there, Andy progresses to turning tricks with a few rich Hollywood insiders, until he finds what he thinks is the perfect arrangement with the closeted star of a family sitcom.
The author admits the novel was "inspired" by his real-life experiences in Los Angeles and, although the book often parallels the author's biography (a role in a Woody Allen film, a part in a film - "The Fluffer" - that satirizes the gay porn industry, a latter decision to go into journalism, not to mention the similarity in the character's name to his own), we really never know just how much is fiction and how much really happened to him. The book is witty, honest, realistic, occasionally explicitly sexual, and often touching, and recommended as a light read, especially by those interested in the gay porn industry and/or the darker side of show business.

Sexy and funny and occasionally touching.

"Going Down in La-La Land" is a delightful book; sexy and funny and occasionally touching. While there is plenty of sex in this book, "Going Down in La-La Land" is more comic than erotic. In fact, Andy Zeffer manages to combine the right amounts of comedy (a lot), tragedy (a little bit) and sex (just about right). And while those who idealize Hollywood's dream factory might be disillusioned by Zeffer's revelations, most of us who view La-La Land more cynically will find our suspicions confirmed, even as we laugh out loud while doing so.

reality check?

I seldom finish a fiction but go on to something else. This one took me through lunchtimes and commute for a week with disappointment it was over. It moves right along with a little humor, sex, intrigue, friendship, romance, addiction, and mystery, all described in a fresh and direct way. I'm old but I suspect it gives a realistic look at what its like for a competent young person trying to make a living and their way in the world nowadays. Recommended as part of the prep for anyone headed for Hollywood to follow a dream.
