A comprehensive collection of CALL-related works.

As CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) has changed, grown, and matured in recent decades, it has become synonymous with practical teaching and learning methods in many parts of the world. This book, which is a collection of essays from authorities in the field, serves as a great reference for those who want to learn more about the different contexts CALL currently applies to, how CALL has developed through history and how it exists in different learning environments, and how it is utilized in language education.
Clocking in at close to 400 pages, this is a massive tome that will surely have something for everyone who is interested in different aspects of CALL research, methodology, and practical applications. The text is broken up into three main parts, each with individual, easily accessible chapters that cover a wide array of CALL-related topics. Contemporary Computer-Assisted Language Learning will be a fine addition to any library or collection of texts that deal with this broad topic. I could not give it a higher recommendation!

As a reader and CALL researcher, I really appreciate the way a variety of key, new CALL topics are presented, from historical, theoretical, methodical, technological and practical perspectives. Through 18 chapters contributed by researchers from different countries yet related fields, this edited volume can help the reader to have better understanding of how CALL has developed, especially in teacher education, language learning, language testing, social media, and task design. After reading this volume, I had a clearer picture of the evolution of CALL. I also came up with new ideas and research directions to investigate further. I think this comprehensive contributed volume can best serve as a great reference for individuals who desire to learn more about CALL, how it has been developed, how it is used in different learning environments, and how it is used in language education. According to Mike Levy, the book is essential reading for postgraduate students of language teaching, for CALL researchers—in short, for “old hands and newcomers alike” (p. xviii). Contemporary Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is therefore highly recommended by me for libraries to include in their collections and for students to invest for useful resource.
